I started the experiment straightaway. I did not reuse the same golem that I’d experimented on already. I felt that it would be better – in an effort to be fair about things – to recruit volunteers rather than pressing golems into service.

So I sent a message to all of the golems working at the forge and asked for volunteers.

Freya fell about laughing when she knew what I was doing.

‘You can’t treat your dungeon-born creatures as if they have brains and can make decisions for themselves!’ she said. ‘That’s absolutely laughable!’

And she did three acrobatic somersaults in amusement.

‘I disagree,’ I said. ‘What about Tiny Tom?’

‘Tiny Tom is an anomally,’ said Freya, ‘maybe because he was your first ever creation something of the great universe was transferred to him. None of the other mobs are like him.’

I metaphorically shook my head, ‘I have been watching those golems carefully, and they appear to communicate and think. They appear to adopt fashion items, like smearing designs on their bodies, and there seems to be among them certain elements of competition.’

Freya laughed even louder. ‘You don’t even know whether they are female or male,’ she said.

‘I think of them all as just my golems,’ I said, ‘though I refer to them as male, in truth I think that they are neither female or male. They have no gender.’

‘Then how can they think?’ she asked. ‘So much of thinking is to do with having an identity.’

‘You ask too many questions,’ I said. ‘They have a golem identity.’

Freya did another aerial somersault, then landed on the top of my stone and rolled her eyes.

‘And I’m going to ask for volunteers anyway,’ I said.

With the matter decided, I sent the mental message to my golems again: is there anyone here who would like to volunteer to evolve, to learn to exist outside my sphere of influence for special missions?

And then Freya fell about in an entirely different way. In fact, she toppled right off my stone as three of the golems stepped forward. And interestingly, one of them was the very golem that I had decided I would not call upon to go again beyond my sphere.

But there he was. I could tell it was definitely him because of the marks that he had put upon his chest.

‘See?’ I gloated to Freya. ‘You’re not always right, even though you are a very special and knowledgeable fairy and certainly know much more than me about dungeons.’

‘Well, this is a first for me,’ she said, and she clapped her hands in delight.

We watched as two of the volunteers tied a rope around the third one’s torso and fixed the ends of the rope onto a pulley system that I had asked them to assemble.

The experiment was ready to start.

‘Now,’ I said, ‘golems, we are going to expose golem three for only five seconds. After that he must be back within my domain.’ I warned them that disobeying this command would be very serious.

The golems seemed to understand. They jiggled and giggled and did little bouncy movements and nodded their heads.
