‘AFRICA’S RAREST MONKEY REMAINS SERIOUSLY THREATENED’

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS CONSERVATION PROGRAMME

COMMON NAME: Kipunji

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Rungwecebus kipunji

SIZE: 85-90cm in height.

STATUS: Critically Endangered.

POPULATION: A complete census has shown that only 1,000 individuals exist.

LIFESPAN: As it is so new to science, the Kipunji’s lifespan is not yet known.

DIET: The Kipunji is omnivorous, but favours fruit. It has at least 122 known food plants.

RANGE: The Kipunji only occurs in montane forest in south-west Tanzania at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,450m in about 70km2 of Rungwe-Livingstone and about 6km2 of Ndundulu forests.

THREATS: Logging, charcoal-making, poaching and unmanaged resource extraction are common. Widely hunted by humans as retribution for, and prevention against, the raiding of crops.
