CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

SONA

Enyo knows.

Could he tell right away, even after seeing that the thought of him dead destroyed me, that I was not the same person I was when I left?

That I was not the same person he made me into?

Not entirely. The part of me he made, but did not intend to—that is what hovered. The part of me that loves him viciously.

The part of me I could not carve out if I wanted to, and I don’t, because it only hurts when I weigh it against the part that needs to end this, that needs to avenge myself.

So I hold the knife. I walk over to Jenny with his eyes on the back of my head, and then on my cheek as I turn, backlit by the cityscape.

I cut her left binds first, then her right.

Jenny laughs, rolling her head to look at me, and I can see all the way down her throat as the sound crawls up and out, sharp and harsh against the softness of the library.

“Okay,” Enyo says quietly, and his voice breaks on the single word.

Then Jenny snatches the dagger from my hand and lunges for him.

“No!” I move, faster than I ever have in my life, between them now and knocking her arm off course, but she seems to expect it and Enyo barks at the guards to stand down as she grabs me and we crash into the nearby reading desk.

I try to move my fist, but there’s resistance, glance to find my sleeve pinned to the surface by the tip of the knife. A round paperweight has materialized in Jenny’s palm, leveled above my head, and I remember the first time she tried to kill me, on the Winterward ice a million years ago. She hesitated then, like she hesitates now.

I drive my knee into her stomach and snap my shin to her ribs, twist as she spirals back to wrench the knife from my sleeve. And then we are both frozen, sudden quiet dropping over the room.

Enyo’s eyes are already on mine when I look at him, our mouths twisted, both our chests heaving with the same hurt.

“Gada,” he rasps to Jenny.

She laughs again, but the sound is frayed this time. She runs a hand through her hair, a nervous gesture I recognize from Eris, but I have never seen Jenny do it herself. “What do you mean, ‘go’?”

“I said go!” He takes ahold of a lamp and sends it crashing into the bookshelf just behind my head, splinters spraying my curls. It startles me so much I drop the knife, the blade soundless against the plush rug. “Go! Just fucking leave!”

The guards at the door step forward, unsure, and he turns on them with the same rage. His features are naturally sharp, all fine lines, but the pretty delicateness in every edge has dissolved under the dark roll of his voice.

“Let her pass or I will have you strung up in the courtyard alongside the renegades.”

Jenny comes closer to me.
