My muscles ached, my bones protested every time I asked them to move.
To slash.
To stab.
To kick.
I pushed my screaming body parts, hoping that they wouldnât fail me.
But it wasnât enough. We did not have enough men to fight. Emmaâs defeated face brought me to reality.
We were losing.
There was no backup cavalry. No assembly line of more guards.
We had given it our all, and we had lost.
I looked out to the ocean and saw my mom and Fish fighting the creatures in the water.
They looked exhausted beyond belief. It was impossible. The more people we brought in to fight, the more creatures the witch manufactured. I should have hit her over the head with a chair when I had the chance. But I hadnât. Iâd been too busy wondering what she meant about me not being human. It was the same question Iâd asked myself a thousand times since my adoption came to light. No one knew where I came from, so how could anyone know what I was? Iâd been selfish, but Iâd also been scared. Scared for me, for my mother, for Fish. Iâd run away...again, and striking the creatures now, felling them with a sword picked up from the armory didnât assuage the guilt I felt.
I continued to fight, but my faith in our victory vanished with our numbers dwindling.
The situation appeared hopeless.
The sounds of screams and moans punctuated the air as our guards fell one by one.
The sea witchâs voice rose above the noise. âI will have my revenge!â
As I looked up to the balcony to where she stood watching over the events playing out below her, an elbow smacked my head, and I dropped my sword. I bent to pick it up amidst a puddle of blood. Our blood. I gripped the pommel and turned around to face the giant frogman. He attacked and attacked until my arms felt as if they were burning embers. Somehow I managed to drive my sword into his chest but not before he slashed at my thigh. Reopening my thigh wound.
I fell to the ground and inched my way to a wall.
Everything moved in slow motion.
It seemed as if the sea witchâs men had knocked every one of our men and women to the ground.
My father and the captain continued fighting, taking longer and longer to bring down their opponents.
Weâre doomed. We canât go on like this.
I was completely empty. I had nothing left to give. We couldnât win. I knew that now. We were literally fighting to the death, and there had been so many.
In the corner of my eye, I saw Admiral Fallonâs navy ship moving forward, and a loud boom sounded. The witch turned around.
âReally? Is that all you have? I will pin your boat to the bottom of the sea.â
The admiral raised his hand, and Hannah wearing her red navy jacket, threw a red cloth into the air. What is she doing?
It fell in slow motion, and the booming noise echoed as an iron cannonball shot out.
