The kid was bopping Alex under her chin because he wanted to nurse. Newborns instinctively know that they can find milk above their head, so when a doe is standing, they will use their nose to tap the underside of the doe’s body and udder. Most learn quickly where the teats are located and will go straight for them when they’re hungry. Due to Alex’s condition, however, she wouldn’t stand up, so the kid couldn’t find milk.
It was such a happy surprise that Alex not only survived but actually began to nurse her twin bucklings when they were a week old.
