CHAPTER 6

The next morning is fraught with indecision as Bella, Dee, and their friends go back and forth over what to do about Henry. While last night’s stakeout gave them some clarity—namely, that Henry is probably psychic—it didn’t make their decision about what to do next any easier. If Henry does have psychic powers, and they say nothing to Principal Koffin about their suspicions, they could be putting him in danger. But if they tell her, Henry will have to leave Peculiar, and he can kiss his fresh start—and their newfound friendship—goodbye. And that’s assuming their theory is true. If Henry isn’t actually psychic and Principal Koffin finds out they were meddling unnecessarily in her business again, they will probably get in big trouble. The girls are still on thin ice after what happened last time, when they almost destroyed the school, exposed the supernatural community, and got their principal taken away to the Underworld. Bella and Dee don’t want to make a mistake like that again.

As Bella and Dee are on their way to lunch, still arguing about what to do, they’re intercepted by Argus the four-eyed crow, holding a letter between his talons. It’s addressed to Bella and Dee, written in Principal Koffin’s telltale cursive handwriting. Bella takes it from Argus and rips it open as the bird flies away.

“Principal Koffin wants us to stop by her office for tea,” Bella says, her eyes skimming the words. “Right now.”

“Now?” Dee’s eyes go wide with worry. “You don’t think the birds heard us talking about Henry, do you?”

“I’m not sure.” Bella lowers her voice and looks around. They tried to be discreet in their conversations, but the campus birds are like Principal Koffin’s spies, always on the lookout for fresh gossip to bring her.

They turn around and head back in the direction they came from, making their way to Principal Koffin’s tower office. When they get to the entrance at the bottom of the stairs, Bella says, “Remember, keep as quiet as a corpse. Don’t say anything about Henry unless Principal Koffin brings him up first.”

Dee nods in agreement.

They take their time moving up the winding staircase, not making a sound until they get to the top and use the brass knocker to announce their arrival. The door swings open on its own.

“Come in, girls,” Principal Koffin says. She’s not seated at her desk, where they usually find her, but in an antique chair in the corner of the room, next to a small, circular table. On the table are three teacups sitting atop matching saucers, decorated with a delicate floral pattern. The girls can see the steam rising from the hot tea.

“Take a seat,” the principal says. Argus, resting on his perch, watches the twins’ every step as they cross the room and sit down on the bench by Principal Koffin’s desk.

“Would you like some green tea?” the principal asks. “I find it a divine way to relax when I’m feeling tense.”

“Tense?” Bella laughs nervously. “We’re not tense.”

“Definitely not,” Dee says, picking at her cuticles.
