Chapter Twenty-Seven

Liam

There is so little to do in this claustrophobic town it’s a wonder they’re not all rabid by now. Or at least, there is little that she would want to participate in, and that I can afford on my fake budget.

Damn these pretenses. The sooner she learns the truth, the better.

Then again, it’s better we do not run into Alicia or Becca in The Village. I can only imagine the shit storm I’d find myself in if they saw us together. As if I don’t have enough to avoid with Rome’s demon spawn running around.

“How many reps was that?” Bradley asks from the bench below me. His chest heaves from the effort.

“Twelve. You’re getting better.” Strength training might be more interesting if there was anything in this gym heavy enough for me to lift convincingly . Feigning exhaustion after every five sets is more humiliating than I could have imagined.

He takes a long drink of water, sweat dripping down the back of his neck. As humans go, he is doing well. But that doesn’t make it any more interesting.

“You were right about the weights. My mile was down by almost twenty seconds this morning.” In what little time he’s been training, he has made great progress. It isn’t fair to hold him to the standard of an immortal, but I have no one else to compare him to.

“Way to go.” I high five him anyway, knowing it’s not his fault I have to pretend. Still, the longer we work, the more I want to quit.

“Do you have plans tonight? Alicia wants to go to dinner, but I could use a buffer.”

Pass. As much as I pity her, I get enough of her unwanted advances at school. I have no desire to ruin my weekend with her never-ending sneers. “Sorry. I’ve got a date.”

“A date? See, I knew you’d like it here.” He punches my shoulder. “Who with?”

I roll my eyes, changing out the weights for my set. “Let’s not get crazy.” Ash Wood is still low on my list of dream vacations, maybe slightly above Greece and the seven circles of hell. “Blair.”

His eyebrows rise so high they nearly meet his hairline. “I thought she hated you.”

“Pretty sure she does,” I laugh, taking my place on the bench. With any luck, that will change after tonight. Or I will make things infinitely worse.

The rest of the workout is swift, in no small part because I do not wish to share any more information with him. Vaughn seems rather unbothered by our friendship, but one can never be too careful.

“Hey, uh, don’t mention anything to Alicia,” I caution him on the way out. “You know, since she—”

“Duh.” He nods, clapping me once on the back. “You think I want to deal with that crap?”

I wouldn’t expect him to deal with her at all, but for some reason loyalty is stronger than common sense. “Thanks. I’d better get going.” The night is rapidly approaching, and with it another chance to let slip a dozen secrets that could get her killed.
