Graeme took off his light jacket and slammed the car door. It was early spring, but there was still a chill in the air. The classic Porsche had died just inside Charlottesville—totally unfair timing, especially when he was there to make sure his family really was safe.

He put on his augmented sunglasses. “Temperature.” The temperature eased into his field of vision from the side of the glasses. 58 Fahrenheit, 86% humidity.

His glasses had been specifically designed for gaming in a real-world environment, but he’d made some last minute modifications before the trip, updating the image capture and recognition software to enable a faster flow of stats with a link to his smartphone.

He checked into the game temporarily. There were still three enemy players alive, and he was barely within the game boundaries. Any farther south or west, and he would have to forfeit his life.

Switching back to his present situation, Graeme touched the side of his glasses capturing the image of the man in the tow truck. He read the instant download. Richie Dubois. Owner of AAA Auto Repair. Age 23, Army vet, served four-and-a-half years. Administrative discharge. Hmmm. Wonder what that was for?

The man walking toward him was the closest expert on Porsches in the area and had excellent reviews. A little bit quirky, according to a few customers, but absolutely brilliant with cars and anything mechanical. Graeme could put up with quirky.

Richie Dubois gave him an assessing look before popping the hood and inspecting the classic car. “Nice. Gonna be a pleasure to work on this.” He laughed, “Expensive, but a pleasure.”

“Yeah, I’m more concerned about how long it will take.”

“We’ll get it back to the shop and find out. Just a matter of getting parts. Heh, heh, heh.”

“Why doesn’t that sound promising?”

“A ‘65 Porsche 911. Heh, heh, heh.”

“Yeah.” Not promising.

“Just like Christmas.” Richie closed the rear hood and pet the cobalt blue car gently. “Don’t worry, baby. You’re in the right hands now.”

Graeme wasn’t so sure of that. He read his viewer, checking for any additional information on Mr. Dubois. Other than the outstanding reviews for his auto work, it was surprisingly sparse. No family, no home address, no phone number, other than the business, and no hits on social media, not even to market his business.

Richie chained the underbelly of the Porsche and gently wheeled it onto the truck. He was friendly and chatty to the car, petting and comforting it. He even offered Graeme an easy smile. Graeme took his seat in the cab of the truck. This would slow his investigation down, but there was a reason for everything.

“Where do people hang out here?”

Richie glanced at him. It was a look of suspicion, as if something just occurred to him. “What are you in town for?”

“A girl.” Graeme didn’t miss a beat answering him.

Richie relaxed again. “Downtown is nice. Little shops, restaurants, movie theater. All the amenities.”

“Cool. Thanks. I held a reservation at Brandy’s Bed and Breakfast as back up. You know it?”

“Sure.
