Chapter 14

“Ah-hem!”

Luci’s eyes flew open and suddenly she was back on the ground, sitting on her rump inside a tree burl and holding a madmantid’s glass eye for ransom.

Teryx was so close that a light breeze could’ve had them tangled up till next Tuesday. He hadn’t moved a muscle, allowing her to close the distance between them. His face had hardened again, the soldier’s facade firmly back in place, but his eyes still burned when he looked at her.

What she wouldn’t give for a light breeze right about now…

Luci pushed that dangerous thought far, far away and tried not to look guilty as she turned her attention to the mage hovering over their perch.

“What?” she growled hoping that her tone would wipe the stupid look off his face. Regrettably, it did not.

Stagmo’s smirk was pinched up and self-righteous. The sort of grin that said he knew exactly what she’d been about to do and he was immeasurably pleased about having interrupted it.

“If you two aren’t otherwise engaged,” he teased, “the cauldron is ready to speak.”

Luci wanted to tell the cauldron and its master that they would have to wait until she and the Princeling finished talking, though ‘talking’ was not exactly what she intended to do. Unfortunately, Teryx chose that moment to sort himself out.

He stood quickly, straightening his bracers in a way that was not at all distracting and nodded.

“We’re ready.”

“Marvelous!” Stagmo clapped once and turned with a flourish of his ratty cloak. “Right this way!”

Luci watched them go, feeling a little too dizzy to stand with all that desirous intention floating around inside her head. After a few seconds, her head cleared enough for her anger at the interruption to shift to relief.

Now was not the time to metamorphosize into a romantic. She had work to do and shouldn’t be wasting time on handsome princes and childish fantasies. What the blazes was she thinking? What had come over her?

Ultimately, Luci blamed the almost-kiss on some strange magic in the smoke, stubbornly ignoring her heart’s insistence that what she was feeling was something real.
