âPhilippa you canât just break in! What if youâre caught?â Julia paced round my kitchen, patting Spree on the head in passing.
âIâll have to make sure Iâm not â and if I find that jersey in his house itâll prove heâs the one who attacked Kate â and the police will have to do something.â
âBut itâs not as if youâve ever seen Callum Jackson wearing a jersey with a mark like that. You might as well suggest that Penelope did it! Or Rose.â
âI just might,â I said grimly. âIf itâs not him it has to be someone. And I canât see it being Luke. Or you.â
âOh Philippa. Why did I get you into this?â
âSo you do think that Vivienâs death is linked to what happened to Kate?â Suddenly it was important to have just one other person believe what I did.
Julia looked wretched. âYes I do.â
âActually I forgot to tell you. I bumped into Luke on the glacier. He told me why Vivien was so upset with her mother just before she disappeared. Sheâd caught her in bed with him.â
Julia stared at me for a moment in silence. Then she did another restless circuit of the kitchen.
âThat never even occurred to me. It should have been obvious.â
âItâs not that bloody obvious. We donât, as a rule, assume our mothers are sleeping with our boyfriends.â
âNot mothers like mine, I agree. But Rose is different. Itâs entirely believable.â
âI see myself as pretty cynical,â I said, âbut I was shocked. It must have been awful for Vivien â and to have her mother laugh at her as well â¦â
âYes. And do you know whatâs plain pathetic? Here I was drifting round in the background hoping Luke would come back to me â while all the while he was screwing Rose. Itâs funny in a way.â
âHilarious.â
I didnât say any more about my proposed break-in at Callumâs house. But I had not changed my mind. And the next day the perfect opportunity presented itself. It would have been better to go during the day. I could have easily made an excuse to slip away from work for an hour or so, having first ascertained that Callum was safely ensconced in a meeting. But that afternoon I was in the store and saw him there deep in conversation with Penelope Blake. I hovered out of sight behind the fruit bins and listened in.
âSo Iâm going up to Whataroa tonight to give this bloody talk on work experience in national parks. The Lions Club organised it. I canât see there being much of a turnout but Iâm stuck with it.â
âHow would you feel about me coming along? I could do with a change of scene.â
âYouâd be welcome. Iâll pick you up about eight.â
They moved out of earshot but Iâd heard enough. Kate was easily persuaded to spend a night with Sally. I went home and had dinner in an unusually quiet house.
At 8.30 pm I drove up to the village and parked my car out of sight behind the guidesâ office.
