CHAPTER FIFTEEN

He leaned against the pillar outside the general store, looking down the street, pretending he was waiting for someone.

Well, not pretending entirely. He was waiting for someone.

They just didn’t know it.

He watched the swarm of people moving backwards and forwards in front of him with mild annoyance. They were like ants. So many of them and seemingly so aimless. All this determined scurrying back and forth, and it mostly amounted to nothing.

It was galling. Irritating. Made him long for the mountain.

But that wasn’t the point of him being here. He had to keep trying to remember that. He had a reason to stand out in front of this store and watch the ants moving, and that was because he had one particular ant in mind to watch out for.

The woman scurried on past, and he stood up straighter, watching her go.

It was time.

He stepped out from his spot slowly, casually, checking his watch and his phone as if he was looking at a message from someone telling him to meet them somewhere else or perhaps not to wait anymore. It was a charade, perhaps not terribly convincing, but designed to fool the casual observer.

Not that most of these little scurrying ants ever observed anyone but their own selves. They were all so self-obsessed. So blinkered to everything happening around them. It was part of how he was able to do this so effectively. If any of them thought for a single second in an independent way, there would probably be no chance for him to get them up the mountain in the first place.

He followed at a decent distance as his target moved around, following the same patterns that she often did. Even when there was variation, it was usually easy to predict what someone would do or where they would go after observing them for a while. People were creatures of habit.

Unfortunately, that held true whether the habits were good or bad.

His gaze strayed to the mountain up above the town as he followed his mark through the streets. There it was, their ultimate destination. The other one didn’t know it yet, but they would be there soon. He waited and bided his time, following the mark down smaller streets and more isolated places until finally he had the chance to do something.

She was alone then, and he could make his move.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” he said as he stepped forward. “I’m going to need you to come with me.”

She looked him up and down. “Who are you?”

“I’m a Deputy with the Sheriff’s department,” he said, gesturing to his body as if to say that the uniform ought to be self-evident.

“Smith?” she frowned, reading his nametag. “There’s no Deputy Smith. Not in this town.”

Of course. She would be familiar with the local law enforcement. Familiar enough to know them both by name and by sight.

“I’m from Canto Rodado County, ma’am,” he told her. “We’ve been drafted in to help with the search up on the mountains.” He knew all about their search efforts.
