Chapter 15

They'd moved him twice, and Ella now found herself in the third safehouse in just as many hours.

This new safe house was a sprawling manor nestled deep in the heart of Nome's residential district—standing taller than the vast majority of small, utilitarian homes. It was well past midnight, and the pale moonlight struggled to pierce through the thick canopy of clouds above, casting eerie patterns on the stark ground below. The grand structure was built with dark, weathered stones that seemed to blend seamlessly into its surroundings—a testament to its purpose as a hidden sanctuary for those who sought refuge within its walls.

Ella had patrolled twice now, and as she peered out the window of her father's safe house, she double-checked the sentries.

On this particular night, the house was heavily guarded by a dozen loyal men, each stationed at strategic vantage points around the perimeter. Brenner was also patrolling in a sedan, prowling the streets.

Cilla had been the source of the upgraded security and the safe house moving.

She'd also doubled the pay of the guards. They were paid handsomely for their discretion and unwavering loyalty, especially since the life they were tasked to protect belonged to the king of Nome, the harsh and cold owner of the town's most prosperous gold mines.

Inside the house, Ella was doing her part in ensuring her father's safety. Despite their strained relationship, she could not deny the blood ties that bound them together. Her father was a difficult man to love—his relentless pursuit of wealth and power had hardened him over the years, leaving little room for warmth or affection. But she was his flesh and blood, and she knew it was her duty to stand by him in times of danger.

As Ella moved silently through the dimly lit corridors, her senses heightened, she couldn't help but feel a pang of resentment towards her father. He never showed her any tenderness or understanding, treating her more like an asset to be managed than a daughter to be cherished. Yet here she was, risking her life to protect a man who had always placed his own interests above hers. She shook off these thoughts, knowing that now was not the time to dwell on her own grievances. There was a job to be done, and she was determined to do it well.

Ella's footsteps were barely audible as she patrolled the house, each step calculated and precise. Her keen eyes scanned the shadows, searching for any sign of an intruder. The weight of her Glock in its holster gave her a sense of control. She knew how to handle herself and any threat that might come their way.

The floorboards creaked slightly beneath her feet as she approached the kitchen. A faint glow from the fireplace cast flickering shadows across the room, and there she found her father, hunched over a chessboard. Jameson Porter was engrossed in a game against himself, his cold blue eyes darting between the black and white pieces.

"Father, you should be resting," Ella said quietly, crossing her arms over her chest.
