Chapter 22

The location the bus driver gave Madison took her and Terry to an area on the outskirts of downtown that was mostly residential. Detached houses were lined up for a mile about a block from the stop, but immediately in front of them were multi-story, multi-use buildings. Some were entirely dedicated to commercial, while others had businesses on the ground level with apartments above them.

She and Terry stood on the sidewalk looking around.

“You realize she could be coming from anywhere within walking distance of here? And she’s young. That could be a big area. Heck, she could even take another means of transportation here, then board the bus to the train station.”

If that’s what the girl did, then maybe Madison didn’t need to worry about her. The girl knew how to cover her tracks. “She’s a drug runner, not a trained spy.”

“Assumed,” he said, not about to let her have it for one second. “Why don’t we pass this location along to Narcotics and let them take it from here?”

“We’ve been through this.”

“Oh, right. But I’m thinking it has more to do with you feeling a responsibility toward the girl for some reason. Any idea what that might be? Because if you don’t, I do.”

“This isn’t about Courtney Middleton.”

He pressed his lips. “If you say so.”

She pushed out her chin. “I do. Now, let’s just do our jobs.”

“I agree. Let’s find the shooter and put his butt in jail.”

He made it all sound so simple. She was exhausted trying to get through his thick skull that they needed the girl as much as she probably needed them. She went to the first person walking down the sidewalk and showed them the girl’s picture. Terry eventually followed her lead and asked other people.

No luck for several minutes, and Madison backtracked to where a man was lifting a rollup security gate protecting the front of a pizza joint.

“Excuse me,” she said to him.

The man stopped what he was doing, dropped his arms, and looked at her. “Yeah?”

“Stiles PD, Detective Knight. Do you know this girl?” She held up the picture, quite certain she was going to be met with the same response she’d heard so far—he didn’t know her, and he’d never seen her. If so, she’d finally concede to Terry’s wishes and stop her efforts to find the girl. At least for now.

The man leaned in, looked at her screen, and held out his hands. “Could I…? My eyesight’s seen better days.”

“Uh, sure.” She gave him her phone, and he studied the picture.

He flushed. “Did something happen to her?”

A swell of excitement bubbled in Madison’s stomach. “You know her. What’s her name, and where can we find her?”

He shoved the phone back at Madison. “You don’t answer my question, I don’t answer yours.” He pulled out a jangling key ring, stuck a key into one of the deadbolts, and twisted. Thunk.

“No, please.” Madison put a hand on the man’s shoulder and withdrew it under his gaze. “We believe she may be in danger.
