Chapter 15

Ella whirled around to face the computer on the desk. She recognized the image nearly instantly. A dark, hooded figure sat in a shadowed room, streaming video onto the screen in the bunker.

“Hello? Are you there?” said the voice softly. “We’ve only just started playing, haven’t we?”

Ella stared at the computer screen, watching as the hooded figure began pacing back and forth.

The man on the screen was shaking his head. The hood hung low, hiding his features. His face was hidden in shadow, and a single, sparking bulb illuminated the space around him, like a halo.

"Where's Amos?" Ella said firmly, staring at the screen.

At first, she'd thought the video was a recording, like the first one. But now, the man's head seemed to rotate when she moved, as if tracking her motions.

Shivers crept along her spine. As she watched the video, she tried to catalogue every pixel, picking out anything that caught her attention.

The man was in a new room now. A dark background, yes, but she spotted copper piping along the walls, and rust stains on the ground.

At least, she hoped it was rust.

The man's gloved hands clasped in front of him as he continued to pace.

"It's a difficult game we play," the man whispered, his voice disguised again. He shook his head.

"Where's Amos—" she began to interject again.

But he screamed, cutting her off, "SHUT UP! Just shut up!" He was breathing heavily now, his chest rising and falling under his dark sweater.

Ella could feel the cold coming through the open window behind her. She was still holding the small GPS box with the safety deposit key in one hand.

But her eyes were riveted by the computer screen.

"You don't take me seriously, do you?" the man whispered. "Hmm? No? This game isn't personal enough for you, is it?" He was staring right at her.

She could feel it.

The camera blinked above the computer screen, facing her.

She didn't look away.

The longer he talked, the better.

Brenner was on the other side of the computer, hidden from the killer's line of sight. His phone was in hand, and Brenner was holding a fiercely whispered conversation with someone.

Hopefully, someone who could track the IP.

Ella didn't want to draw the killer's attention to Brenner, though, so she returned her gaze to the computer screen.

"Who are you?" she said.

"You don't know me," he said softly. "Not yet. But there are those who do. It was all started in love, anyhow."

He nodded as if agreeing with his own words.

"What was started?"

"You know," he said simply.

"Where's Amos?" she tried again.

"Amos? You want to see Amos? Okay... I'll show you. See... see I told you what'd happen, didn't I?" If a voice could communicate a finger wag, his did.

And now, the killer was pacing.

He'd lifted up the camera on his hand, like a selfie, and was breathing heavily as he moved with it.

She struggled to reorient with the picture as it moved and swayed. Her hands were pressed on the desk as if glued to the wooden surface, braced there.
