Chapter Thirteen
âSeri?â I slowly opened my eyes.
âLola?â My voice was unrecognizable. I looked around, knowing I was waking up from the worst nightmare of my life. The relief felt incredible.
âSerena? Hey, youâre okayâ¦â
Blinking slowly to clear my vision, I saw Parker. His eyes were filled with concern and lined with fear. Realizing, as usual, I was stuck drowning in a nightmare.
âParker, sheâs goneâ¦â I didnât want to be alive. I wanted to be washed away and feel free from the burdens of this life. If Lola was gone, I couldnât survive. I wouldnât. I couldnât handle loss.
Not again.
âI know Seri, but they are gonna find her. Sheâs a strong little girl,â he whispered, holding my hand tightly.
A voice cleared and we both followed it.
âParker, would you give me a moment with my wife? Our daughter is missing, and I think itâd be best we handle this alone. Together. I know you donât have a family of your own, so you donât know boundaries.â Eric stood fuming in the doorway.
âWell, Iâm just so caught up having to take care of yours, I guess I didnât get a chance for my ownâ¦â Parker spewed back.
âFuck off, Parker!â Eric yelled, his face bright red.
âSully, itâs okay. Iâll see you in a bit.â I nodded to him and gently patted his hand. My body was weak, my mind was weaker. I didnât have it in me to referee the ego-filled fight between the two men in my life.
âIâll be right outside. Call me if you need me. We shut the clinic down today.â He stroked the hair off my forehead before planting a kiss on it. Eric cleared his throat again and took a deep breath, exhaling loudly.
He strolled in and sat at the foot of my bed. I could have sworn I wasnât in my room, but instead, laying in a hospital bed. Seeing Lolaâs baby blanket again triggered something I couldnât handle. I was exhausted from being strong all this time for everyone.
Who would be strong for me?
âWe were happy once, werenât we?â I looked at Eric. His green eyes were tinged with red. I knew he was up crying, too. As shitty of a husband as he had been, he adored our daughter. Having children was always the one thing we always agreed on the most.
âWe can still be happy, baby. You just have to forgive me. We will find her. We can be a family again. Look whatâs happening when we arenât together. I wasnât home and now Lola is gone.â He looked at the floor.
âYouâre blaming me? You think you could have prevented her from being taken? What the fuck, Eric?â I couldnât believe him. Instead of comforting me, he was accusing me.
âWhat were you doing when she was taken, Serena? Screwing Parker?â He pierced through me. I didnât even recognize the man I spent so much of my life with.
âGet the hell out of my room, my house, and my life, you fucking asshole,â I shouted.
Ericâs fist clenched, and for a moment, my hand instinctually blocked my jaw.
