AS LUCY PREVARICATED, a voice whispered in her ear. ‘I hoped you’d be here.’

She spun round, poised to run. Alain was standing in the shadow of the doorway. Without thinking, she flung her arms round his neck. He pulled away, smiling.

‘Well, I’m glad you’re pleased to see me, after you nearly got me banged up. Thank goodness I found you. When you let on to Joubert where I was, I barely managed to get out of there alive. Armed police came for me. They were at the door, but luckily there was some ruck at the hotel and I managed to give them the slip.’

‘I know,’ she giggled. ‘I set off the fire alarm.’

‘I might have known you were responsible. What were you doing going back there when you knew – oh, never mind. I can see it’s not a good idea to let you go off on your own. I lose control of you for one morning—’

‘You didn’t lose control of me. You never controlled me in the first place.’

‘I’m beginning to think someone should.’

‘Talk about ungrateful. I just saved you from the police. If it wasn’t for my quick thinking creating a diversion, they would have taken you away and locked you up.’

‘You weren’t exactly thinking quickly when you told them where to find me.’

‘I didn’t know then that Joubert was working for Patrice, did I?’

It appeared to have slipped Alain’s mind that he was the one who had insisted Lucy go and see Inspector Joubert in the first place.

‘Yes, well, I’m here now, and no harm done, so let’s calm down. We don’t want to draw attention to ourselves.’ He glanced around the nearly empty side street. ‘I could do with something to eat, but let’s head back to your flat and pick up Patrice’s key first, and then we’ll find a safe place to rest and discuss what we’re going to do with it.’

As they walked along side streets, avoiding the Gare du Nord, Alain smiled at Lucy. Joubert would not have kept him locked in a cell indefinitely, and would never have risked taking him to court on some trumped-up charge. There was really only one way his arrest could have ended. Yet nothing in his expression betrayed that he had just narrowly escaped capture and death.

‘You realise if I hadn’t got you out of the hotel, you would have ended up with a bullet in your head?’ she said at last.

‘Unlikely, I think. Bullets are far too suspicious. And they’ve already thrown one victim in the canal this week, and another in the river. I rather fancy I would have “committed suicide” by hanging myself in a police cell. There would have been a bit of a fuss over how I got hold of a belt in there, and some poor custody sergeant would most likely have lost his job over it, or his prospect of promotion. After that my death would have been quietly swept under the carpet.’ He halted and stared at her seriously.
