CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Ella set sail across the Mediterranean Sea, nothing but calm waters and curious marine life out ahead. She’d never sailed a boat before, but she was more than happy to learn on the job. Just before she set off on her aquatic venture, a few Italian men on the coast had offered to join her out in the hazardous waters, and she remembered thinking it odd how they could make such a bizarre request sound appealing and even romantic despite them being total strangers. But this was a solo trip. No people, no phone, and no problems.

At the click of her fingers, Ella was out in the middle of the ocean, swaying to the tune of steady waves. She left the distant shore behind, now nothing but a speck in a field of blue waters and bluer skies. Time to forget about all of the issues at hand. Her dad’s mystery could wait another day, as could her problems with Ben, and she would let the world’s serial killers roam free until she returned. She left her real self back on land, and out here she could attune herself to nature and rebuild everything she felt she’d lost. Out here, the magnitude of her problems seemed to shrink. The only things she had to worry about here were drowning and shark attacks, both of which seemed to put her worldly problems into perspective.

She welcomed the turbulence that came on the waves, swaying side to side but feeling one with the Earth, in harmony with the natural world. After double checking the boom and cleats were locked in position, Ella sat on a lounger and took in a panoramic view of the unchartered waters that surrounded her in each direction, the Sicilian coast now just a memory.

But despite the tranquility, Ella couldn’t shake the feeling she wasn’t really here. While her physical self was among the waves and fish, her spirit still lingered in Washington, D.C., in drab hotel rooms and dusty old buildings. An invisible cord secured her to that city, and she was only one harsh tug away from hurtling back to the real world. Try as she might to distance herself from everything that brought her down, this unseen force kept her in a state of captivity.

The sound of a struggling rudder interrupted her contemplations, whirring and chugging beneath the surface. Ella got up, leaned over and checked everything was still turning, but found the rudder had cut out.

“Dammit.” She went into the front cabin to restart the engine but couldn’t find the keys. They weren’t lodged in the ignition.

How could that be? She was all alone out here, unless the mild waves had somehow knocked them out.

Then thunderous footsteps rushed her from behind. She heard the closet door burst open and slam shut in quick succession, and before she could turn around there were hands clutched around her throat. Ella tried to kick, punch, even bite at her attacker but couldn’t summon the strength to move, let alone fight.
