CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ella swerved onto Jewel Hill, Paige sat beside her, gripping the arm rest in fright. Ella had finally become the person she scolded Ripley for being.

“It makes total sense,” Paige said.

“Doesn’t it?” Now that Ella had had time to process the new findings, it fit as tightly as a latex glove. “Borowski might just be smart enough to throw us off the scent with multiple murders. Jack the Ripper only wanted to kill his last victim, but he killed four others to throw off suspicion. What if that’s what Borowski’s doing?”

“Hiding the true motivation amongst a series of slayings. If it was just Bill he’d killed, suspicion would naturally land on the people who hated him.”

“Exactly. This could be a single murder disguised as serial. Borowski’s dad was the owner of the museum, so he’s one of the few people that actually know of its existence. His dad worked at the copper mill too, so he might be aware that that old place was abandoned too.”

Paige nervously shifted in her seat. Ella recognized the motion a mile off. It was the excitement of an inevitable confrontation with someone who may very well be a serial murderer.

“It’s coming together,” Paige said.

Ella eyeballed the passing houses, looking for any that had a red truck in the driveway. A quick anonymous call to the fire department had confirmed Borowski was on the night shift, so there was a good chance that he was asleep right now. Even better, Ella thought.

“And you remember the video feed? The killer had a hint of an accent. It definitely wasn’t pure American.”

“I didn’t clock it. I just remember it certainly not being a Bah-stan accent.”

“There,” Ella shouted. “Red Toyota truck.”

Paige checked her ammunition levels, then holstered her Glock. “Locked and loaded. We ready to party?”

“Yeah. We need to keep our eyes on the exits on this place. There’s no fence going into the woods back there, so if he bolts, he’s got an advantage.”

Paige asked, “You take the front, I’ll take the back?”

“Sounds like a plan. Let’s go.”

Out of the car and up the dirt driveway, Ella moved with new determination, new resolve to get this case wrapped up. One side of her wanted to see this man rot in a jail cell, and the other wanted to dig into his brain and see what puzzles lay within. Were all of his riddles just misdirection away from the greater cause, or were they a part of his compulsion?

Ella banged on the door while Paige kept her distance. She stood around twenty feet to the side of the house, ready to move in either direction should the suspect flee. Paige was a much better fit for the job than Ella given her otherworldly agility.

No response from inside.

Ella tried again, listening closely for movement from the other side. Paige voiced her concerns, but Ella favored patience. Another knock, louder this time.

Finally, there was life somewhere within.

“Hold on,” a voice called. Ella recognized the frantic stepping of someone struggling to answer the door in time, usually expecting a parcel on the other side.
