Fact: All giant pandas in the world, no matter where they’re born, are owned by China. The use of giant pandas as diplomatic gifts to other countries is called panda diplomacy, and dates back to the Tang dynasty in the seventh century.

I don’t hear back from Dad. With nothing else to distract me from worrying, I decide to throw myself into preparations for Ginny’s Camp Part II. I spend the rest of the weekend coming up with new ideas based on my interviews, hoping that this time my camp will be something everyone wants to come to.

On Monday morning, I grab my last clean pair of shorts and tiptoe downstairs to begin getting ready. I want to get as much done as possible before anyone else gets up.

I start by toasting a bagel and setting the oven to preheat. Then I open the fridge and pull out the roll of chilled sugar cookie dough I made yesterday. My camp promised facts and snacks last time, and my snacks were terrible. Luckily, this is an easy problem to fix. I love to bake.

I cover the cutting board with flour to keep the dough from sticking and start rolling it out. Allie and I always decorate sugar cookies at Christmas, but we do them in the shapes of trees and wreaths and angels. These will be better.

Once I have a thin, even layer of dough, I grab a plastic knife and begin to carve it into continent shapes. Africa and South America look somewhat similar, but South America is skinnier and pointier on the bottom.

As I’m carefully carving a Europe, Mom appears in her pajamas and starts the coffee maker.

She looks at the huge slab of dough on the counter and the blinking oven light. As if it knows it’ll get me in trouble, the oven beeps that it’s finished preheating.

Mom exhales heavily. “You know you’re not supposed to use the oven by yourself.”
