Chapter Twenty

Ethel joined Barb and Jane at the domino table. "This is okay, I guess, but I'd rather be with Ginger and Elijah, eating Italian."

"We are eating Italian," Barb said.

"Real Italian," Ethel said.

"How is pizza not real Italian?" Barb asked.

"This is delivery pizza," Ethel said. "At The Pasta House, everything is made from scratch."

"Ethel," Jane said, "this pizza is from The Pasta House."

"Oh," Ethel said, selecting a slice of pepperoni pizza and placing it on her paper plate. "But it's not the same as being there."

"Why? Because of the paper plates?" Jane asked.”We could have used real ones. Shall I break out the good china?"

"It's not about the plates, Jane," Barb said.

"Then what?" Jane asked.

"She jealous," Barb said.

"Jealous?" Jane asked.

"I am not," Ethel said.

"She wishes she was the one having dinner with Elijah," Barb said.

"Barb!" Ethel said.

"Well, not necessarily Elijah," Barb said. "She just wants a man."

"I don't want a man," Ethel said. "I don't need a man."

Barb and Jane stared at Ethel.

"Okay, maybe I am just a wee bit jealous," Ethel said.

"I knew it," Barb said.

"Well, what's stopping you?" Jane asked. "Go out and get yourself a man."

Barb and Ethel looked at Jane as though she had suggested the lottery as a get-rich-quick scheme. They broke out into laughter.

"What?" Jane asked. "You could get a man." She couldn't hold a straight face for long before she cracked up.

"Wait a second," Ethel said. "It's not that funny."

"Oh, it's not you, Honey," Barb said. "There are just no available men in this town."

"Nobody our age," Jane said. "Except Elijah."

"Ginger has all the luck," Ethel said.

"Well, you could look outside of Coreyville," Jane said. "Use one of those online dating services. There's bound to be some nice bachelors in—"

"—Dallas?" Barb asked.

"Dallas?" Ethel asked. "I'm not about to date some guy who lives way over in Dallas. Forget it."

"Then I guess you'll be sitting here eating dinner with us every night," Jane said.

Ethel took another bite of her pizza and grimaced. "What a life."

"It's just fine with me," Jane said. "I love hanging out with y'all."

"Me too," Barb said. "I just hope we can keep hanging out here."
