Chapter Nine

THE TRAIN STOPPED in the station with a screech of the brakes. Snipers were stationed in each of the central roof hatches in the cars, but no shots rang out. Roan waited another moment, his fingers hovering over the button to open the door, and when he still heard nothing, he pressed down.

The door slid open, revealing the familiar streets of Outpost, completely empty. Not a single person, animal, or car was out on the street.

Roan raised one finger, tapped his chest, and pointed forward. He switched to two fingers and pointed them first left and then right. Instructions given, he stepped out onto the open-air platform.

A whoosh of displaced air was his only warning. Roan drew his sword in one smooth movement and used the momentum to slash up and across the belly and chest of the brown wyvern dropping down at him from the sky. Roan reversed his swing, neatly slicing the wyvern’s throat as it hit the ground. Roan turned and thrust, impaling a second brown. He kicked the body off his blade and turned again, just in time for Syth to leap into the air, far higher than his build implied, and pull an orange wyvern from the sky. The wyvern hit the ground with a cracking thud, landing hard on its wing bones, and Syth tore out its throat.

Roan spun around, searching for more. A third brown was hovering overhead as if unsure whether to attack. Belatedly, shots rang out, one hitting the brown, which fled in the direction of the wilds, squealing. His four soldiers still hadn’t unsheathed or unholstered a weapon, which didn’t speak well to their training. Roan would have to speak to Lyss about them.

Another spin and this time Roan didn’t see anything. He dug out a cloth and cleaned his sword before sheathing it.

One of the soldiers knelt by the orange, reaching for his belt knife. Roan growled and strode forward.

“You think you deserve to harvest a heart?” Roan snarled, grabbing the man by the arm and hauling him away. “We’re here on a mission, and if you don’t want latrine duty for the rest of our time here, you’ll complete the mission before thinking about getting greedy.” Roan shoved the soldier back into line with the rest of his group. “That goes for all of you. Now, keep your heads on a swivel, and let’s go.”

Roan and Syth led the way off the platform and down the street. A blue, a red, and two brown wyverns fled as they reached the main road. Roan frowned, watching them fly away. Outpost might be on the border with the wilds, but wyverns had never been so bold as to come into the town. They picked off livestock and humans out in the fields every once in a while, but usually only when they were desperate. Those wyverns were generally thin and sickly, nothing like the ones Roan had killed at the station or the ones fleeing.

His group trotted down the street, past empty storefronts and houses.
