Chapter 20

The agent who dropped of the SUV for David's use had another follow him, clearly without the intention of giving us additional backup. David frowned at him, but remained silent. Truthfully, this was the first opportunity I had to corner him alone without the risk of any interruptions whatsoever.

"What the hell is going on, David? I mean really. No bullshit this time. Why didn't they even offer to back us up on this one?"

"It's a cold case nobody expects us to solve," he shrugged. "Are you driving or am I?"

"David, I'm not going anywhere until you level with me."

He sighed and raked five fingers through his thick, grayed hair. "Helen, just let it lay. Please."

"So you're admitting that there is something going on with you?"

"Nothing of the kind, my dear. We're on a very hot trail of a heartless killer though, and whether you want to acknowledge it or not, Jeremy Rhodes fits the profile of a father completely dedicated to his children, ergo, he shouldn't be out searching for this psychopath alone."

"Right," I muttered. "Don't suppose you happen to have Burt's cell phone number do you?"

"Let's just follow the leads. Odds are good that Rhodes simply shut off his phone to talk to these former coworkers of Mrs. Markinson himself, Helen. Let's go to the—where did her mother say she worked?"

"Office supply company, but she didn't stipulate which one."

David was on the phone to the agent who had just left us the SUV for a moment of terse conversation. "Got it. Thanks."

Nothing of the kind. Wasn't that what he said? I worked side by side with David Levine for a decade. Not one time had I ever heard him being so terse. "David, please talk to me. Whatever is going on, let me help you, if only by being the one who listens and won't judge."

David glanced at me briefly before rattling off the address. "You want me to put that into the GPS?"

I nodded and held my tongue. Whatever it was David was struggling with, sharing it with me more specifically, wasn't going to be on the agenda for discussion.

He was on the phone again as I began navigating to a business that wasn't all that far from where we were located. Naturally, that made sense based upon what Cindy Dooly revealed about her daughter and son-in-law. Neither of them would've been inclined to commute far from their home. They didn't live in Conifer after all, but in Morrison, which was very close to Littleton.

"There and gone, you say?" David asked. "I see. Did they happen to mention where they were headed?"

My heart thudded heavily in my chest. Rhodes learned something, and he was in a hurry to follow up on his lead.

"He's gone," David said as he stuffed his cell phone back into his pocket. "They showed up and talked to the witness the field agent said clued them into this abnormal interest H. S. Fletcher had toward Markinson—"

"Wait a minute. Are you telling me that this is really our unsub's name?"

David nodded grimly.
