Chapter 11
"Pull over," Tony ordered.
"How'd you get here?" Lupe demanded. "Don't give me any of that flying horseshit."
He laughed. "Sounds like Whitney's been telling you some wild stories. That was just a crazy little something I made up to dazzle her while we were having a few drinks. At her place."
I jerked the car to a halt at a bus stop. "How the hell did you get here?"
"Piece of cake. I was in a cab, coming down Sunset to Shirley's to find out what's happening, I saw the Chevy. Hard to miss. Bright redâ"
"Like blood," Lupe interrupted in disgust, but he didn't even look in her direction.
He reached over the front seat to the paper bag with the Jack Danielâs in it. "You mind?' He cracked it open and took a drink. "Told the cabbie to follow you and climbed in back while you were in the store. Snuggled in among your silk shirts. They smell good. Like you."
"Too bad the cops haven't caught you yet," Lupe screamed at him. "Motherfucking slimeball."
"Get out of the car," Tony scowled at her. "I gotta talk to Whitney. Alone. If she wants to handle a case this big."
"Whitney says you killed that girl."
"Shutup, Lupe," I snapped.
Lupe swiveled towards me with a cold hard look. "Don't you everâ¦"
"Need an interpreter? Tony and I got to talk." I glared back at her. "Now get out of the car. Or are you intentionally trying to fuck things up for me?"
"I'm not going to tell you again," Tony growled at her while waving a hand in my direction.
"Ohhh, a big man like Ernie Piss on His Horse Foot," Lupe drawled. "So, you don't murder women, whatta you do, just hit them?"
"I never hit a woman in my life."
"I don't believe you," I said. "I think you've hit a few, like Shirley. But I don't think you killed her."
He looked at me in surprise. "You don't?"
"Not since I talked to the guy who lives next to you."
Lupe grabbed my arm. "Turn you on that Tony might bat you around a little? Did your old man mess you up so much, you think this is how men are supposed to act?"
I picked Lupe's hand off my arm. "Leave my father out of this. He might be a crazy son of a bitch, but he's my old man. If anyone's going to talk shit about him, it's going to be me."
Lupe put her hand on the door handle. We looked at each other across what seemed a great distance. "You lied to me! You said you were going to turn Red Wolf into the police in twenty-four hours. Now you got me mixed up in this, and with the cops."
Tony leaned over the seat, put his hand over hers and forced open the door.
I will not crawl back to my old man with my tail between my legs. "Get off my back. Go try taking care of your kid for a change. You're in my way."
"You're a selfish bitch." Lupe put one foot out the door.
