“I swear the energy here is starting to fuck with me,” Lucas said, as they walked back toward the library. “Rocky says he’s okay, but from my end, it makes my bond with him feel all jangly.”

“I know what you mean. Since we got here, Quentin’s been closer to the surface. I feel like the lines are starting to blur, and I’m worried, a little, about keeping him on a short leash.”

Lucas frowned. “It’s not too late to leave.”

Shane snorted. “You heard what Doc said. You’re the only one who can fix what’s wrong with the hotel.”

“Remember all those movies we used to watch? Being the ‘chosen one’ was never a good thing,” Lucas replied.

“What do you need to go inside?” Shane asked, shifting the discussion. “Because if the hotel has been phasing in every three days, it should be due again tonight.”

“I’m expecting that Mama Jean, Doc, and Eddie will be there with you while I’m inside. Joseph can’t really do much since the demons are locked in; otherwise, we could just have him exorcise the lot of them. If Doc really is a psychopomp, then he might be able to help deal with ghosts even if his magic keeps him from entering the hotel. Mama Jean and Eddie can help you make sure we don’t get blindsided by Elliot and his murder house gang.”

“I’d appreciate the backup,” Shane admitted. “I still don’t know what kind of creatures are in the woods. I’m not going to take someone else’s word on whether they’re friend or foe until Quentin and I can size them up.”

“Fair enough.” Lucas fell silent for a while. “It sounds like Eddie, Mama Jean, Doc, the cemetery ghosts…they’ve all worked together to protect the hotel and the anomaly. Even so, some bad ‘entities’ still got into the hotel. Now those entities are harming the hotel—and affecting its energy. It would be even worse if the crazy cultists took it over. So if we can dispel the entities and get rid of the demons, maybe the anomaly can go back to the way it was, and the scholars will be safe.”

“And then the guardians can protect it the way that’s worked until now,” Shane replied.

“We can hope.” Lucas chewed his lip as he thought. “I’m going to need salt, silver, and some of those dried plants we’ve been gathering—the ones that are good for protection. It wouldn’t hurt to have some holy water, but I don’t know where we’re going to get that. I’ll brush up on the banishment rite—take my book with me, just in case.”
