I followed Jill to the Dean’s office, grateful that the students wouldn’t be arriving for another hour or so. Crescent City Academy had a high-tech enough security system that we could fast forward on the footage to see what we were looking for. Not just the grounds, but the hallways themselves had cameras set up. It wasn’t that fights were common at such an elite academy, but it was standard of practice at this point for any school. Parents expected their chosen institution to be able to keep an eye on their child.

Jill perched on the front of the Dean’s high-backed leather chair and ran through the footage. I stood beside her, keeping enough distance between myself and her green cardigan that the cat hair wouldn’t send me into a sneezing fit.

“Here,” Jill said. She paused the footage and tapped on the screen.

I leaned in. A slight figure in a dark hoodie could be seen entering the Academy. The face was obscured by the hood in this frame, but we kept watching. Jill switched video feeds to track the individual’s movement through the school hall. We watched the hooded figure approach the announcement board in the middle of the hall and unsling a satchel that had been obscured by their body. I squinted. I knew that satchel. I had just seen it.

No face could be seen as the figure removed supplies from the satchel and stapled sheet after sheet of Lucy Bettencourt’s face onto the board. Once the entire board was covered, the figure turned and moved quickly back up the hall. The face was obscured throughout the entire incident. It was almost as if the perpetrator knew the school well and knew where every camera had been placed on the hall. That only served to confirm my suspicions. I knew who this was.

Jill rewound the footage to watch it again, but I straightened. It would do no good. If this was who I suspected, she wouldn’t let her face be seen. Taking a recognizable satchel though, that was interesting. Perhaps a part of her wanted to be caught. Maybe that’s what this was all about.

“I’m going to go check on the clean-up,” I said, stepping away from the desk.

Jill waved me out the door without taking her eyes off the screen. Her pupils practically glowed in the reflection.

The main hall was empty, the announcement board clear as I passed. I took a right at the end of the hall and moved quickly toward the gym. I’d imagine that’s where my culprit would be. Working out with her father.
