CHAPTER FIFTEEN

T

he next morning, I woke up with my eye throbbing. Sleep eluded me after that, so I got up and took a shower, and got ready for my day.

Finn, the twelve-inch stuffed Leprechaun appeared. By appearing, I mean went from being stuffed to coming alive. I had seen little of him lately, as he was busy with his own life in another world.

No. I’m not crazy. Well, not certified, anyway.

“Finn! It’s so good to see you. Where have you been?” I smiled at the little elf dressed today in a fisherman’s sweater and brown pants. I hadn’t seen him since he helped me out of a jam a few months ago.

“What happened to your eye?” He asked, his eyes wide.

I shrugged. “Oh, ran into a door.”

He laughed, the big, jolly, belly laugh that should come from someone much larger than he.

I sat down at my vanity and turned on the lights attached to the mirror. My eye looked terrible. I did my best to cover it with makeup, but you could still see it.

Once Finn stopped laughing, I turned around, a brush in my hand, wondering if I should throw it at him. Instead, I asked, “Finn, what do you know about ghosts?”

“Ghosts?”

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I waited for his answer. “I think I can see ghosts.” I thought for a second. “Well, so far only one ghost.”

His finger moved to his beard, which he stroked. “It’s not unheard of for your kind to see ghosts. You do have fairy blood, you know.”

My head swirled at the confirmation. “So… will I see ghosts from now on?”

He shrugged. “Probably. This is good information to know.”

I took a deep breath, filing that information away for later. “So, how’s the family?” Finn had taken me to his homeland. A beautiful place with gigantic mountains and a rainbow that never faded.

“Good, other than the wee one is teething.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. What are you doing here then? Shouldn’t you be helping your wife?” I thought back to the last time I saw him. “Wait. The last time I saw you, you said you’d be back the next time I’m in trouble.” I set the brush down, and came and sat next to him on the bed. “Does this mean I’m in trouble again?”

He chuckled. “Aren’t you always?”

“Very funny. No, I mean with this latest murder.”

“You’ve gone and got yourself involved in another murder? I can’t leave you alone for a minute, can I?” He stood up, his hands on his hips.

I rubbed the side of my head where a slight throbbing had appeared. “Finn. Am I headed for trouble?”

He laughed again, and I rolled my eyes, and went back to the vanity and finished brushing my hair.

“That’s why I’m here. I do sense impending danger, so do be careful. I’m being sent on a special mission from the Elders, so I may not be back in time to help you. Tell me about this murder.”

I spent the next ten minutes telling him what we knew, which I realized then wasn’t much.
