âHey, I didnât know your mom lived here. So she teaches at the school?â I asked as I followed Percy to the back room of the family home. I shot a quick text to Maurice about needing her to look after Axle for the night too. Iâd be back by early morning hopefully.
Gene and Heather had a large home with a number of spare rooms. I could only assume it was for other pack members when things were rough.
Alex hadnât been too pleased when Iâd left him chatting with Gene to go talk more privately with Percy.
He wanted to ask me something, and I felt uneasy knowing that.
âYeah, she used to teach when I was kid. As I got older, she spent more time at home than at work while my father mainly worked,â Percy gave a sharp laugh. âAt least, thatâs what he told us.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âMy father never actually married my mother. And all that extra overtime he spent at âworkâ, he was actually seeing another woman from another pack,â Percy said as he slumped down on the couch.
A sunroom was what the back room was, but the dark night sky was all that greeted us now.
âIâm so sorry,â I murmured as I sat down beside him.
âDonât be. You canât abandon the pack, but you can marry into another one. There are loopholes. My mother was a wreck at first, but she threw herself back into work. She loves working with the kids,â Percy said with a smile.
âThatâs good that she loves her work.â
âWhat about you, whatâs family like for you?â Percy asked, his hand sliding across to squeeze my knee. I caught my breath, the heat rising in me from such a simple touch.
I knew he noticed too as his nostrils flared and eyes dilated. Bloody âwolves with their super sensitive noses.
âMy mother died from breast cancer after my eighteenth birthday, and my dad disappeared shortly after that. He became so different when she was dying, giving his all in helping her, and when she finally passed, it broke him. I havenât heard from him since,â I said, and I could feel his pitiful stare.
âIâm so sorry, Ivy,â Percy murmured as he took my hand and squeezed it.
âIt was years ago now,â I shrugged in an attempt to shake the sadness that had settled on me. I tried not to think of my parents anymore. I did sometimes wonder what had happened to my father, where heâd gone, what he was doing. If he even thought about me.
âSo youâre Alexâs secretary then,â he changed the subject, which I was grateful for.
âYeah, I got the job a few years back, itâs interesting at times, and other times thereâs just so much paperwork to do,â I laughed.
âIâm glad I never had paperwork to do, all I ever did was patrol buildings.â
âDidnât that get boring?â
âYeah, I guess. I enjoyed the quiet though. I worked construction for a few years before that, helping build some of these homes,â he indicated
