For completeness as much as anything, I was going to call Genevieve. She was going to be tied up for a chunk of the day, of that I felt certain, and needed to get a call into her quickly. If she was guilty of faking her husbandâs death, I was going to hear it in her voice.
Shockingly, while I was deliberating how to word my careful accusation, she called me.
âGenevieve, good morning,â I answered guardedly.
âAmanda, hi,â she was a little out of breath. Was that fear of discovery affecting her heart rate?
âI understand you are having quite the start to your day.â
âSo, you know then,â Genevieve remarked. âIs nothing sacred? A person ought to be allowed to rest once they are in the grave. Listen, I ran into Jeremiah on my way out of the door. I sent him away because your friend, Benjamin, is still in my house. It would have been ⦠awkward, I guess, if theyâd bumped into each other. Jeremiah has something of a crush on me, I think.â
He did, Iâd seen the way he looked at her.
âI donât suppose I could beg you to send him a message for me, could you. Benjamin that is, not Jeremiah. Just to let him know Iâm sorry for just running out like that. I donât have his number, Iâm afraid.â
âI can send it to you,â I offered, flicking between apps. âItâs on itâs way to you now.â
Genevieve thanked me and made it clear she wanted to get off the phone. I dearly wanted to ask her what they were going to find when they opened Simonâs coffin, but I couldnât find a way to do it without levelling an outright accusation. I almost did it, but lost the chance when she snapped out a swift âGoodbyeâ and ended the call.
Even then I toyed with the idea of calling her back.
Tempest put a hand on my shoulder. âYou should let it go for now. The truth about Simon is coming out today whether she likes it or not. Her lawyers will not be able to stop the exhumation. He is either dead as she claims, or alive, in which case she is in a whole heap of trouble.â
He was right. Letting her maintain the pretence until the truth was out there for all to see was the most sensible strategy to employ.
I pocketed my phone, and making a silent bet with myself that we wouldnât have a client for this case by the end of the day, I followed Tempest down into the London Underground again.
It was still early when we arrived at the Travel Place near Leicester Square. Next on our agenda was to explore another of the murder locations, but first Tempest wanted to âhave a little chatâ with Frank. The well-meaning crazy man was a mite unpredictable, as demonstrated by his unexpected appearance at Genevieveâs place last night. He wanted to be involved, convinced as he was that we were up against the forces of hell, but his good intentions were likely to just get in our way.
