I thought about entering the bank myself and seeing what would happen, but I wasn’t dressed for it. And given that the bank would have additional security inside, I got out of the car instead and took my time walking around the streets of Fojnica. The older quaintness of the town was interspersed with modern construction projects that looked to be the result of overcoming damage from the war. Older homes that had endured during the fighting now sat juxtaposed next to modern apartment buildings. Small markets that catered the certain neighborhoods looked to have competition from larger chains attempting to win over a slice of the local market. But there was still enough of small town charm to satisfy me as I explored. I took a stroll around the periphery of the bank, watching and waiting.

It was on my second go-round that I felt a twinge in my gut that I didn’t much like. And it wasn’t coming from the bit of local cheese I’d sampled along with a glass of wine from the local vineyard, which had both been delicious.

This was something more sinister and I knew that whoever had been in the forest yesterday was back in the area now. I didn’t know for sure but I’d learned to trust my gut over the years and it was clamoring at me right now.

But where was the threat coming from?

I always try to put myself in the position of a potential attacker. If I was trying to take out Mitchell, how would I do it? If he was the target, then blowing up half a city block like the bomb at the restaurant yesterday wasn’t exactly the best and most precise way to accomplish it. If I could have gotten a cell phone to him, I could have remotely detonated a nice little number that would have taken half his head off and put plenty of wood into his bloodstream. That’s how the Mossad took out the Engineer a few decades back.

A frontal attack on a security team would be the last thing I’d try simply because the odds of success were much smaller than if I could take out my target from a distance.

And distance was the key here. So why had they tried again yesterday with Amina?

Unless that was the point: make it look like they wanted it to be up close and personal so Mitchell and his team wouldn’t be looking for a distance hit. Throw a couple of fakes and then take the real shot when they were looking the other way. It made sense and there was a certain effectiveness to it depending on the skill behind the trigger.

As I walked, I scanned the rooftops. I didn’t expect to see a glint of the scope on a sniper rifle. A professional wouldn’t let themselves be picked up like that - even though in my own past I’d tagged one or two who had done just that. A professional sniper who knows what they’re
