Cope

The rest of the morning went by at light speed. Cope had three readings in a row before lunch, which meant he had no time to dwell on the meeting with Bozeman, who had several walk-in customers of his own. Each of them booked a second session with the tarot reader. Cope hoped the situation with Bozeman and Indigo resolved itself before they had no choice but to send him and his new customers packing.

After sharing sandwiches in the conference room, Ten took Cope home. “In the mood for some ice tea?”

“Sure!” Ten took a seat at the kitchen table, his attention focused on the bird feeder attached to the back deck. “Everly’s become quite the little birdwatcher. She’s even got Ezra excited about them, although they make a hasty quick exit when he bangs on the glass with his little hands.”

Cope laughed. “Wolf sits in your seat and draws the birds while Jude makes Sunday pancakes. They make a big deal about me getting to sleep in one day a week.”

“Hmm, I’ll have to casually mention that to Ronan. Although Ezra has been stuck to me like glue lately. Poor Ronan. When we come home, the baby runs to me.”

“Wolf went through a stage like that with Jude. He wanted nothing to do with me.”

“How did you solve that problem?” Ten asked as Cope set an icy glass in front of him.

“Treats! Your mother taught me how to bake chocolate chip cookies. While he gobbled them up, I’d talk to him and tell him stories. After two weeks and several dozen cookies, the situation resolved itself.” Now that he was older, Wolf loved baking with Cope, especially if that meant time alone without his sister.

“What are we going to do about Bozeman?” Ten asked, seemingly out of the blue.

Sighing, Cope took the seat across the table. “I don’t know. I was on pins and needles all morning, praying Indigo didn’t return and prompt Bozeman to start shouting at thin air.”

“I hate to say it, but I felt the same way.” Ten took a sip of tea. “I was at the cash register when his first customer was checking out. The woman said it was the best tarot session she’d ever had and asked me to book another appointment with Bozeman.”

“There’s no doubt he’s got charisma. When we were both working in New Orleans, he was the talk of the town. Customers came from far and wide to sit at Bozeman’s table and have him read their cards. Brad Pitt and Harry Connick Jr. were among his celebrity clients. His calendar was always booked months in advance. That was until he closed up shop.” Cope sighed.

“You’re right about charisma. We all sat stunned when we met with Bozeman the first time and he read Ronan. I could see how nervous he was to hear his future spelled out for him, but Bozeman had this way of explaining what the cards meant and soothing him at the same time. It was quite a thing to see.
