Chapter 20
Morgan Jasper
Most of the businesses in town changed their decorations daily to align with their tribe of the day, per the Allegro Tribe Application. The Crystal Ballroom had never fallen in step. Instead, each tribe entered and exited the ballroom through their designated door, which could only be opened by placing their tribeâs specific type of crystal over a beam of light. It had been that way for almost sixty years.
The system was designed by Uncle Boji, and I'd assumed it was some type of precursor to our modern laser. My instructions since childhood were, âdonât mess with the system and it wonât mess with you.â And it never had. Until tonight. Tonight, for a ninety-minute period, the doors had gone haywire. Opening and closing in rhythm with the music.
And driving us all mad. Finally, it stopped when the new guy left.
Onyx proposed that the PIâs phone must have been broadcasting a signal that interrupted the doorsâ signals. After all, when Uncle Boji created the system, cell phones were still science fiction.
If he returned for more classes, and I hoped he didnât, heâd be frisked. I couldnât take another night like tonight.
It was now 10 Pm and Onyx, Melissa, and I sat huddled around Ruby's desk, which was now mine but would always be Ruby's.
âDo you suppose Mr. Mayor knows? Is that what the PI wasâ¦â
âMaybe sheâs having an affair,â Melissa interrupted.
Onyx shook his head. âBetty Quarters, I donât see it.â
âYouâve been away. People change.â
âBut Mrs. Quarters, not likely.â
I drummed my pen on my leather binder. Where was Mr. Trombone Man? We could use his insight. âI have to agree with Onyx. The thought of Mrs. Mayor stepping out on Mr. Mayor is like Mrs. Clause leaving Santa.â
Onyx smirked at my visual. âYeah, what she said.â
âWell, maybe someone is holding her captive and forcing Mr. Mayor to do something against his will.â
âLike what? Not like the mayor has any secrets of national security or anything. Heâs the mayor of a small town in constant turmoil on a small island in the middle of a big lake.â
âShipping lanes.â
Onyx shot a rubber band at Melissa. âYou watch too much TV.â
âWe have to ask him.â
âAlmost right. We need to inquire about her. Judge his response, and then make the call.â
âLetâs set up a meeting with the mayor to go over plans for the concert.â
Melissa retrieved three wine coolers from the fridge. âWell, if we are going to do that, weâd better work on the plans. Have we even determined a location yet?â
âI thought we talked about the high school auditorium?â
Onyx took a long drag on his cooler. âHow many sets am I playing?â
Jeez, worry washed through me. Onyx was here to rest and reduce his stress. Once that was accomplished, heâd be gone again. And I didnât want to think about that. âHow many do you feel up to playing?â
His eyes narrowed. âMorgan, Iâm fine. Remember, Iâm supposed to control my stress, not curtail my activity.â
Melissaâs clanging bottle as it hit the trashcan put a stop to that conversation.
