When Claire was finally discharged from the hospital, Drew was true to his word and drove her home. The more time they spent together, the more comfortable she felt around him, and the more acclimated she became to their energy connection. When they got to her house, he insisted on walking her to the door, though she told him repeatedly she was fine.

Claire unlocked the front door but didn’t open it immediately. “Would you like to come in?” she asked after a long pause. Even as she said the words, she wasn’t sure why she had.

Drew seemed surprised as well. “Sure.”

As soon as the door closed behind them, a ripple of excited energy filled the room. Claire groaned. She had probably made a huge mistake.

Drew stood in the entryway for several seconds, most likely trying to get a read on the sensations he was feeling and wondering what he had walked in to.

“Would you like something to drink?” Claire asked casually, as if the whole situation was perfectly normal.

“Sure,” Drew said again as he slowly followed Claire to the kitchen.

He sat down at the island while Claire got the coffee maker going. She glanced over at him, trying to read the expression on his face. So far, the house projections hadn’t actually made an appearance, but that shouldn’t matter. With his sensitivity level, there was no way he had missed their energy.

When the coffee was ready, Claire handed Drew a mug. He took a sip and studied her.

“You know you have a presence here, right?”

Claire nodded as she blew on the hot liquid in her coffee mug.

“More than one, if I’m not mistaken.”

She nodded again. “They’re harmless though.”

Now it was his turn to nod. “I know.” He set his cup down and leaned forward, arms folded on the counter in front of him. “I get the feeling there are some things you’re not telling me.”

Claire raised her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“Well, for starters...” He spread his arms out wide. “You live in a haunted house.”

She scrunched up her face. “Actually, ‘haunted’ isn’t the best way to describe it. They’re more like roommates that most people can’t see.”

He looked around the kitchen. “Most people?” he repeated. “Does that mean you can see them?”

“Sometimes,” she said reluctantly, “but only when they want me to.”

Drew shook his head. “That’s awesome. I just see colored mists, but you get to see the real thing.”

“It’s not always awesome. Sometimes it’s a big pain in the butt.” She chewed on her bottom lip for a few seconds, debating how far she wanted to take him down the rabbit hole. “Have you ever tried to see the ghosts during your investigations? I mean, have you ever tried to see past the mist?”

He leaned forward. “Do you think I can learn how to do that? Like, really see them?”

Claire nodded slowly but didn’t elaborate. She didn’t want to think about all the things he would learn how to do once the Bureau recruited him and he entered the agent training program.
