When Haleson showed up with the Wyvern, I waved and tried not to look stupid. He stared at me with big yellow eyes, staring at the sleeping vampire baby in my lap.

“Hostage. Perfect. I’ll spell you in the sleigh.” He grabbed the traces and pulled them over his shoulder and then spread his enormous green wings and leapt into the air. He must have spelled more than me in the sleigh, because we all rose without the slightest bump, before I got the chance to tell him that no, we weren’t using the sweet little vampire as a hostage. We gained height and then the wyverns formed around us, a corps of defenders against the massive force of Darkness witches that filled the sky.

Macaroons and Bonbons we were so screwed. I stood up with the child and met eyes, daring anyone to kill Haleson’s nice wyverns.

“Back off or she’s toast!” Did they speak English? Probably not.

Haleson roared and a wave of yellow exploded out from him, knocking the witches back. They recovered too quickly, but they kept their distance, gray skin, bald heads, red streaks down their faces, super pretty. And such pretty teeth. More and more came all the time. I bit my lip.

“Haleson, we’re going back to New-Old Scythe,” I called, leaning forward.

He nodded and then beat his wings faster. The world streaked by in gold and yellow tinged neon green and then we were there, flying above the city and the armies below. It was just Haleson without the wyvern or Zach.

For a moment we were alone in the sky, then it was crowded with the creepy vampire ladies. They attacked, hitting the shield around the sleigh and knocking Haleson away from me. The sleigh spun and rolled, plummeting down and down and down. I curled up on the bench and covered the child with my body. We hit the ground hard enough that she woke up with a cry and big eyes, clinging to my hair as we crunched through armor and mages. Also dirt. And rocks. With a final horrible scraping, we came to a stop while dust rose around us. I sneezed a few times. The shield wasn’t keeping out ashes and dust. Did that mean the shield was down? I put my hand out and felt nothing. I sneezed again and then an ear-splitting roar had little Cookie Monster climbing up to hide under my hair, digging into my neck and shoulders. At least she hadn’t bitten me. Again.

A hulking figure stalked through the dust looking super ominous and creepy. I crossed my arms and scowled at him. I’d know that silhouette anywhere. His glowing red eyes were the first distinguishable feature.

“Why are you attacking Daysiders?” I demanded the second I could see Signore’s features sort-of clearly.

He gripped my shoulders and opened his mouth then roared, so loud, it rattled my brains inside my head. He’s the one who had roared earlier.

Cookie Monster started crying while I vibrated from the sound. Signore reached into my hair and pulled out Cookie Monster by the neck.
