It was Eileen’s birthday. Today of all days.

I had rung her on the way home from the meeting and replayed the entire conversation as I could remember it. I was still seething so I was jumping about from one bit to the next, not necessarily in the order it happened.

Then I would remember a bit more and let rip once again. She mostly listened as she had done so many times before. It was only in the years that followed that I realised I had been talking at her and not to her.

‘Guess how much they’ve offered,’ I had said. ‘Go on, guess.’

She had known, of course, how much I had already in my mind.

When I told her the figure and she asked me what I was going to do, I had simply said ‘I dunno’.

I had let it all out at such pace in the car that when I had no steam left to come off and paused for her opinion, my entire tone changed on that question.

I wanted things to be amicable.

‘One of you will leave with a million-pound recording contract and the other will leave with nothing,’ Kate Thornton had said on the night.

Eight months later, I had never envisaged that it was possible to leave with both.

I didn’t want to go to the press despite what I had said to Sonny. That wasn’t my style and I wanted things to be amicable. Also, at the back of the mind was the Closer article that got pulled and I really wasn’t sure if they would now dig that up out of context. Nor could I know how any of it would play out full stop. Could I be absolutely 100% certain that the waters wouldn’t get muddied and I could do my story justice in the 2000 words or so that I would get in a paper?

By the time I had got home, I was quiet. I had nothing else to say. The expectation of the meeting and the gut-wrenching outcome left me shattered. I had spent many hours of that previous night just contemplating.

One moment, I thought they had just made me a low offer to call my bluff so I would come running back and agree to everything and do the live shows. Then, I thought I had genuinely stunned them – surely nobody knocks back an opportunity to return to The X Factor. But that’s exactly what I had done to get out of the deal.

Then my head was telling me it couldn’t be true. I had six million votes and just twelve weeks before my album had been number one. Now I was dead in the water.

By the time I went to bed, I was starting to see some daylight between today’s events and where I had to get to.

Immediately, I had to make sure that Eileen had a good day. Things had been tough and this was a chance to try and switch off a bit, but I still had legal moves to make.
