087 TAKE THE PLUNGE WITH A LONG TELE

These are the optical monsters that can capture a lion’s eyelashes from the safari vehicle, or the soccer header from the nosebleed seats. They are the mainstays for wildlife and sports from long distances, faraway nature or architectural features, news events, and those “big sun” or “big moon” shots. The compression effect becomes greater still with a long tele, and depth of field can be so limited as to totally blur out a distant background.

Going into very long telephoto territory requires significant commitment, both financial and physical. These lenses are big, heavy, and expensive. Yes, there are some tele-zooms for the smaller formats (APS-C and MFT) that are not so expensive and on the lighter side, but these tend to be quite slow. Search for faster lenses in these ranges, and the price goes up.
