Knowing What's Coming

Years ago, we moved to Alaska for the month of August. We drove from Anchorage to Homer on the Kenai Peninsula via beautiful Highway 1. A local client had loaned us their truck and given us a book titled The Milepost. It is a travel guide to the Alaskan highways with mile-by-mile details of road conditions, sights, and services.

Jodi affectionately referred to it as “100 Ways to Die in Alaska.” Mile by mile, the book described the local hazards of grizzly bear zones (aka “wildlife viewing”), quicksand beaches, and avalanche danger areas. (We're not making this up!)

Jodi loved this book. She read ahead while Jason drove. As frightening and foreign as some of those hazards were, it was a relief to know about them in order to avoid them and continue along the Sterling Highway.

Knowing what's coming can be a huge relief when you find yourself struggling with a large, long-term project. Unlike The Milepost, you don't have to know every single detail from point A to point B. But in terms of your big project, planning and completing the first three months of subprojects will help you build and keep the momentum you need to follow through to the end.
