During my evening class one snowy day, my students begin packing their bags. “Uh,” I say, because there are two more hours left in the class period and I am administering a midterm exam.

“We were told to go home,” one says. She shows me her phone.

My students have all received text messages from the school’s administration advising them that there is a snow emergency and that they should return home immediately.

“OK,” I say. “Get home safe.”

I receive no such notification from the school, via text, email, or otherwise. Not that day, nor the next. When I ask at the office why not, no one can tell me.
