Callie

I left the dining hall, but the entire time I was walking across to the door and out, I could feel Shade watching me.

The truth was, I did want him to walk me back, but I didn’t want to be the one to make that choice. He had been there for me all day long, on multiple occasions, and I needed to remember that he was going through something tough too. I wasn’t going to put my expectations on him, or my disappointment.

I headed through the house, out the front doors, down the steps, and out into the yard without skipping a beat. I chuckled as I walked along, heading toward the edge of the house and around the side toward the gardens. It wasn’t that long ago that I had first come out of the house after being kidnapped, running straight for the front gate. I could still feel the pain from slamming into that invisible barrier. He hesitated for a moment but then came over and sat down. I shook my head, looking at the bracelet. “I still don’t know how I did that. How does it make you feel?”

He lifted a brow. “How does what make me feel? You constantly being in danger? Not great.”

I shook my head. “No, knowing that a puny little human, with somebody else’s magical bracelet, broke your big bad protection spell.”

He lifted his chin defiantly. “It was beginner’s luck. Besides, everything that happened led to this moment here, and the moments we’ve had in the last few days. It may just lead us forward in stopping the King Collector and returning my brother and Willa’s father to their thrones. So, I guess I’m not too upset about it.”

Shade gave me a boyish grin and I felt butterflies flutter in my stomach. Sitting on that small bench, we were touching shoulders, hips, and legs. It felt natural though, not forced or awkward, but like we had done it for a very long time. I kind of
