In one conversation, the Tunisian, Essid Sami Ben Khemais, told his Libyan friend Ben Heni Lased that there was a plan to “try out” a drum of a “liquid” in France, according to a 50-page police transcript of the phone calls given to Reuters on Monday. “This liquid is more efficient because as soon as it opens, people are suffocated,” Khemais said. He did not identify the liquid but said that it could be transported in tins of tomatoes.

Lased is quoted as saying on March 9 that he wanted one or two 10 litre cans of unspecified poison for a planned attack. “Tell the sheikh . . . that I don’t need an army, just two people who have got brains, training . . . and nothing to lose or to gain,” he said.

“I’m sorry that if someone wants to become a martyr they must ask for authorisation from Sheikh Ali Abdullah,” he [Lased] added. Italian police noted that Ali Abdullah was one of bin Laden’s aliases.
