Alongside providing legal aid for detainees, the SRLAWF introduced correspondence courses for those interned, with many detainees such as Robert Mugabe leaving prison with qualifications in multiple disciplines. After the initial detainment of nationalists in 1959, the state did provide some basic assistance for the dependents of the detained, yet following the ascension of the RF such schemes were halted.

For Haddon, the decision to introduce the Law and Order Maintenance Bill in 1960 was further evidence that ‘the present government policy is leading this country to inevitable chaos and bloodshed’.87 Identifying with the nationalist cause, as she wrote in the Examiner,

the people who break laws like the Law and Maintenance Act are often people with a strong moral conscience, natural leadership who are convinced that what they are doing is for the ultimate good of the society. They have lots of courage, idealism and intelligence. They accept imprisonment not just as a punishment for wrong-doing but as a phase in political struggle.88
