Chapter Sixteen
I pressed redial until my finger was numb.
What had happened to my friend?
Who had she been running from?
Was she okay?
As if her spidey senses had intervened, my phone rang again and I immediately picked up.
âWhere are you?â
âIn the janitorâs closet,â came a whispered, labored response.
âWhatâs going on? And what can I do?â I began pacingâ¦worried that things with Bonnie hadnât gone as well as planned and now my friend was on the run.
What had she done?
âI think Iâve lost them,â she replied after a moment of shuffling, still whispering, her breathing only slightly more under control.
âLost who?â My voice was higher than usual though Iâd noted, I was now, for whatever reason, whispering too.
âThe dudes following me from Chicago.â
âFrom Chicago?â I blinked. Had I missed a day? I hadnât slept that long, had I? âIf youâre not in Chicago, where the heck are you now?â
âHello? Havenât you been listening? Iâm trapped in a freaking janitorâs closetâ¦with smelly mops, trash and other disgusting, bacteria-infested items that I donât really want to think about!â
âHelp me out here, will ya? Where exactly is this janitorâs closet?â I replied through gritted teeth, testing the boundaries of calm as I attempted to drill down to the bones of what we were dealing with.
Or at least, with Leah, rein it into the ballpark.
She scoffed, as though I had been right beside her. âHell-o! Iâm in Phoenix. At Sky Harbor International Airport,â she paused but when I didnât immediately respond, continued her rant, âAlright, back it up a notch. Itâs clear Iâve lost you somewhere in the translation.â I rolled my eyes.
Nothing about hiding in a janitorâs closet could go without a more thorough, detailed explanation.
âAnyway, I felt a bit twingy when I got to Chicago but figured I was just being paranoid. I may have had a few too many quad lattes beforehand. You know how I get.â
I nodded absently. Ornery was the best way to describe her after that dosage of caffeine, I thought to myself as she prattled on, âAfter that, something just felt offâtingling at the back of my neckâlike somebody had eyes on meâ¦you know the feeling?â
I murmured a yes. If she was squishy, she probably had every right to be.
âThen, once I arrived at the morgue and started digging around, I noticed that one of the dudes milling about seemed familiar. He was doing a pretty crappy job of pretending to do his own research. Thatâs when it clicked. I realized he looked just like the dude who had been sitting at the sports bar at OâHare, trying too hard not to look at me. And here he was, doing it again. Only this time, his pal wasnât with him.â
âOkay, let me get this straightâthis same guy, he was sharing space with you, in the morgue?â I was confused. Just how big was this place? I thought it was nothing more than a room with a couple of file cabinets, maybe a table and a chair or two.
As if sensing
