Nick had never been so angry with his mother. This was the third time she'd pulled him away from Kate. He liked it less and less each time it happened.

"I'd like to introduce you to Lydia Templeton. This is my son Nicholas." His mother beamed with more pride at every subsequent introduction.

"Call me Nick, please" He smiled at the woman and shook her hand.

"Lydia is a member of the Fine Arts League."

Fine arts? What did Nick know of fine arts? Symphony? Ballet? Opera? All subjects he had no interest in.

"I hear you live in the area?" Mrs. Templeton began.

Nick felt as if it were the first of many questions in her interrogation. He didn't know what she wanted him to tell her, but he could feel himself wanting to slip back into his shell.

"Yes, I do" Nick pinched his tie as if he were straightening it. SOS, Kate. SOS! He glanced around, looking for her. He'd expected her to be nearby, listening in so she could help.

"Do you attend the opera, Nick?" Mrs. Templeton continued, sounding as if she were leading him somewhere.

"Not recently," was his polite answer. Then he spotted Kate standing way off to his side. There, she could see both him and the person he spoke to. To his surprise Kate wasn't staring at him but at Mrs. Templeton.

Kate touched her earlobe. Talk to her. What was he supposed to say?

"I just don't have ... the time to attend as much as I'd like." Nick thought he'd talked himself out of a night at the opera pretty well.

Until Mrs. Templeton replied, "If you need an escort, I'm sure my daughter Antonia would be glad to accompany you."

Nick didn't mean he couldn't find anyone to go with, he meant he hadn't allocated time during his life to voluntarily attend.

"I can introduce you her to you, if you'd like."

Nick smiled and nodded, continuing to be polite as he'd been taught. Mrs. Templeton excused herself to find her daughter.

There was no one to blame but himself.

Not a minute went by before Nick's mother brought another one of her friends for an introduction. Connie Kaminski.

Big surprise-she had a daughter who would be willing to accompany Nick to the museum's new art exhibit. If he just wanted to see her, it could be arranged.

Nick wanted to get away, but Kate signaled to him be polite and wait. He was very polite to Mrs. Kaminski, and when he saw the opportunity, he excused himself by saying, "I think I hear my mother calling."
