Chapter Eleven

Dara followed Kane out of the house. She watched as Kane punched holes into the straw.

"What?" Kane finally asked her.

"You are damaging yourself," Dara frowned at her, "why?"

Kane sighed and sat down.

"I need to see things for myself," Kane told her. "I won't always be able to link with you to see what I'm doing. I've been trying to push in the ability to see like you do."

"Can a person do that?" Dara asked surprised.

"Not so far," Kane told her. "I gave it up. I'm just getting headaches."

"No," Dara looked at her. "You didn't give up. That's not in your nature. You're just waiting for another try. Let me see."

Kane held still as Dara examined her injuries. Dara frowned.

"I don't know what you've done," Dara told her. "but it's something. For all we know you just awoke the ability to…to make birds to swim and fish to fly. Now that would be real useful. Let's go talk to Celeste. I need to ask her about Haley's gifts anyway."

"Rhoswen seems to have a special feel for our gifts," Kane got up. "I was thinking about asking her, but…"

"You were afraid she would tell you how silly you're being," Dara guessed.

"Actually, I was afraid she would tell me what kind of fool I'm being." Kane corrected her. "Why aren't you?"

"I can't imagine being able to heal, but not to see," Dara told her. "Celeste told me that there are healers like that. What good is that?"

"What do they do?" Kane asked.

"They have to either link with a seer," Dara answered, "or work like other poor human doctors—blind and bloody. Celeste will understand your need. She may even have a suggestion—since you are so determined."

"Good," Kane walked with her, "because I am."

"I knew it," Dara laughed.

"Do you think this will work with Kellan?" Kane asked worried.

"It has to," Dara stopped laughing. "We all need each other."

They found Celeste down by the creek gathering mud—clay to be exact. Dara laughed to see Claybits assisting her. He kept getting exited and jabbering about little bits of clay here and over there. Celeste was doing her best to ignore him.

"It seems that everyone is going to their stress release projects," Dara commented. "Kane was at the barn punching straw donkeys."

"It was a rather stressful session," Celeste admitted. "Honesty is very tiring. It's much easier to lie and gloss things over."

"Kane is damaging her brain trying to see like us," Dara told her.

"I had guessed as much," Celeste nodded.

"How come you didn't say anything?" Kane asked surprised.

"We all have our secrets," Celeste grinned.

"Yours isn't such a secret," Dara told her.

"Why?" Celeste laughed, "am I showing?"

"Silly woman," Kane laughed, "you know you don't."

"Does Stefan know yet?" Dara asked.

"Yes," Celeste smiled, "of course. You can't keep secrets like that from a Fire Mage. He had a bet on with Nick to see when I would tell him."

"Who won?" Dara asked.

"Stefan," Celeste told them. "My man knows me."

"Fire Mage and healer," Kane added, "so—are you going to help me fry my brain?"

"It's not unheard of to encourage a particular gift," Celeste sobered.
