"Now, the questions," said the big white Pawn. "How many moves will it take for a white pawn to walk across an empty file and reach the last rank from the starting position?"

"Six," said the freckled girl.

"It can do it even faster, in five moves," Gary corrected. "Because the pawn can jump two squares ahead from the starting position."

"Right, Gary, very good!" the big Pawn said. "How about this one: can a pawn visit all the squares of the chessboard?"

"No!" all the other children replied in unison.

Gary smiled. He realized why it was such a tricky question. "Yes, it can. It can get to the last rank, turn into a queen, for example, and walk to any square it wants!"

"Perfect!" the big Pawn said, smiling again at Gary. "Now the last question: look at the board and tell me what moves the white pawn can make!"
