Chapter 20
After several weeks in the combined household of Stones and Hawthornes, Hunter found it difficult to keep the smile off his face. The transition had been seamless, and despite the two rambunctious kittens, there was only minimal chaos. Preston had adopted two sisters; one was the orange kitten of his dreams, who heâd named Ceridwen. Her equally adorable sibling was gray and called Demeter.
They werenât intimidated by anything and had survived their first few supervised visits with the resident dog. Rochelleâs response was a great deal of sniffing and offering the men in the house questioning glances, as if she couldnât figure out what they were. Although no one believed Rochelle was much of a danger to the kittens, they continued to allow the pets time to acclimate to the house and each other.
With the help of Jordan and Talon, Preston tacked pages on a corkboard to help him keep track of his tasks. For the cat care, Talon had bought a dry erase board and used a permanent marker to list the necessary tasks. Each day, Preston could make check marks on the board, then scrub it clean at night. The system was working perfectly, and Jordan had relaxed about his brother.
By all accounts, Preston adored his room, loved his kittens, and was pleased to be in the house. Talon continued to aid him and Colburn in learning basic kitchen tasks, and the entire family was served odd dessert concoctions at least twice a week.
Preston and Colburn would not evolve into chefs, but the pair enjoyed planning their recipes and, under Talonâs watchful eye, producing their culinary surprises. Jordan continued to privately refer to them as disasters, but no one wanted to discourage Preston or Colburn.
âDonât you have a job?â Talon asked.
Hunter hadnât heard his brother come into the kitchen, but he managed to muffle his shriek of fear. âI was waiting for you.â
âIf you need help today, I donât have much time to spare,â Talon said. âJordanâs working a double, and Preston has his support group, so Iâm picking everybody up.â
âActually, I wanted to talk to you about something personal. Gargoyle Security will be fine without you today, donât worry.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothingâs wrong,â Hunter replied. âI had an idea I wanted to run past you.â
Talon poured coffee into his mug and leaned against the counter. âOkay, shoot.â
âHow difficult do you think it would be to cover for me this afternoon? Jordanâs working, but I need the boys to believe Iâm somewhere work related. If I tell them the truth, they might accidentally give away my secret before Iâm ready.â
âWait a minute. What secret? Whatâs going on?â
âI donât know why Iâm suddenly nervous,â Hunter said. Then he shook his head at his own silliness. âJordan and I have talked a lot about what a matebond is, but without knowing Fateâs idea of what it should be, weâre going with our feelings. Unlike me, Jordanâs a hybrid, and heâs meant to straddle two worlds, at least in theory. Iâm not looking for an argument about the Council.
