Samara was waiting on my doorstep when I arrived home from my rather soggy dog walk.

Diggory shot me an enquiring look. I shrugged slightly at him. I had no idea why the editor of the local paper was here to see me, but judging by the look on her face, it wasn’t to talk about anything good.

“Hi Samara!” I said as brightly as I could manage. The woman on the doorstep looked me up and down. I knew I probably resembled a drowned rat but for whatever reason, the dark expression on her face seemed to lighten.

Oh.

This was to do with Jay.

“Might I have a word with you in private?” Samara asked, her smile full of sharp teeth.

“Sure! Come right on in. It’s too wet to hang around outside.” I kept my voice cheery knowing it was better to feign complete ignorance, if I wanted to get out of this one alive. Hang on… I didn’t mean that literally, did I?

I swallowed down my thoughts about murder and the wisdom of letting one of my neighbours into my house. It would be fine. Probably.

We stepped through into my hallway together. I remained dripping slightly on the doormat with a soggy Diggory next to me. The wood floor would need wiping when Samara was gone, but I was hoping my soggy state would encourage my not entirely wanted visitor to get on with it.

“I wanted to talk to you about Jay,” Samara said, thankfully biting the bullet right away.

I merely nodded encouragingly, wanting her to get it all out in the open.

“We are in a relationship. We’ve actually been together for a couple of years, but we’ve been keeping things very private. You know what our neighbours are like… they love any chance for a gossip!” She raised her eyebrows. I smiled weakly. “It’s also complicated because of Lena, of course.”

She bit her lip, clearly wondering how to tell me to back the heck off her man. I wasn’t going to make it any easier for her. I’d done absolutely nothing wrong and had never shown any interest in her partner.

“I think Jay likes you,” she said, meaning it in the friendly way.

I nodded. “He seems like a nice man. It was a pleasure making that bouquet he commissioned for his daughter.” Ha! There… I’d thrown her a bone about how it was all just business between us. Which it was! I had zero desire to move in on her relationship. I had enough things to worry about without getting involved with a man who had wandering eyes - at least, this visit was pushing me to suspect exactly that.

“He is nice. He’s been through so much. I’m sure you know about his fiancée Kerrie running off right before the wedding?” She shook her head at the awfulness. “Even back then I liked Jay. We could all see what kind of woman Kerrie was, but love can be blind, can’t it? And I’m sure they were doing their best to stay together for Lena.
