Chapter 27

Lou let loose, barking and running toward the door. I darted off the sofa, but didn't make it very far since Mona grabbed my arm.

"Wait! We don't know for certain who is outside that door," Mona whispered.

"Good point. Jake! Hey Kline, is that you?" I shouted while Mona groaned.

We got our answer when the sound of pounding irrupted. "Open up, will you?" Kline said.

My hand grabbed the doorknob and I pulled. Mona and I stood there staring at Jake who had a very unhappy Roberto in handcuffs. His bloodied nose and torn lip indicated it had not exactly gone without a hitch. Of course, Kline looked like he always did, well-groomed and without a flaw.

I wanted to ask about Nick Galina, but pride kept my mouth shut. On the other hand, Mona had no problem.

"What about Nick Galina? Didn't you find him?" Mona glared at Roberto, and then jabbed at his chest. "What did you do to Nick? You better not have hurt him."

Roberto rattled off curses in Spanish. At least I imagined they were curse words with that tone of voice. When Kline slapped the side of his face, I had to stifle the laugh begging to come out.

"Watch your mouth. There are ladies present," Kline warned before smiling at me. "You're welcome."

I rolled my eyes and he laughed.

"And I don't know, haven't seen, never heard of a Nick Galina. Sorry, ladies. At least now I have something better to do with this thug than tailing his dirty carcass." Kline grabbed Roberto by the arm and steered him toward the car. "Let's go. You have a date with a jail cell."

"Ha. Cute," I mumbled, but he heard me. He laughed again only sweeter this time and I smiled. "Make sure you drive safely."

"Yeah, will do. Night." Kline threw an arm up to wave without turning around.

"Um hmm," Mona said.

I turned to face her. "What?"

"You know what. Love is in the air. That's what," Mona teased.

"Oh shuttup." I turned to go back into the kitchen to make coffee. I seriously needed a boost. I tossed Lou a doggie biscuit while contemplating something constructive. "I want to talk about what we have so far. I'll talk and you jot everything down. Remember our lists? It will work." At least I hoped it would work. If nothing else, it could give me the confidence I was missing right now.

Mona grabbed pen and paper, and then sat poised, ready to write. "Shoot."

"Let's start with the day of Manuel's murder." Just five days ago, I thought. And to think how many more horrible moments followed. But along with that, it seemed we managed to get a few leads, but just not enough. I wanted more, and I wanted it now. I only had a few days to accomplish what felt like the impossible, to stop Carlos Ruido and his crew before the meeting where Grezzo puts Luis out there like the sacrificial lamb. No doubt about it, I needed a miracle.

"Okay, so we know where Luis is, or at least we know he's with somebody on the police force.
