Chapter Forty-Four

By the time Georgia had been introduced to Hettie’s husband, the funeral director entered to show them through to seats along the first row of pews in the chapel. Overwhelmed with emotion, Georgia didn’t hear much of the service, but partway through, Hettie rose to speak for a few minutes about her brother, then Dennis took his turn. His talk sounded more like an investment presentation. Perhaps the words were intended to reassure any investors who were present that everything was under control. She didn’t know and didn’t much care. But maybe she should, given her income was tied to the investment group just like the other partners.

The service complete, she was shown into the reception room where food and drinks had been set out for the attendees. Individuals began to line up to shake her hand and extend their condolences. Georgia was surprised at how many people were there, but was positive she wouldn’t know any of them. She asked Hettie and Andy to stand with her as the process began.

Ian and Dennis were at the front of the line and attempted to take up positions either side of her. but Hettie and Andy were already there to her left, and suddenly Randy appeared on her right, so the partners eased off to hold court by the food table.

A lot of people were obviously investors. They held her hand as they gave their condolences, extolled the virtues of investing with the group, then moved on.

Two women approached, smiling, but she was too befuddled to focus. “Georgia,” one said. “You remember us, Kali and Rose, from university.”

She felt a jolt in her chest. She hadn’t seen either of these women in months, in fact since their graduation ceremony, but they had been close friends during their course load in the university Psychology programme. “Kali,” she said, giving her friend a grateful hug. “Rose. I’m so glad to see you.” She turned to introduce them to Howard’s sister.

“I saw the notice in the paper and called Kali to let her know,” Rose said. “I’m so sorry, Georgia. We need to get together and catch up. Here’s my card. Call me, and that’s an order.”

Georgia choked on a laugh. Rose had always been highly directive. She stuck the card in the pocket of her jacket along with all the others she’d been handed today. Then she took a breath and looked around. A woman who’d been standing off to the side approached now that the crowd had thinned.

Hettie stepped forward before the woman could speak. “What are you doing here, Miriam? You told me you weren’t coming.”

The woman directed a lethal stare at Georgia. “I changed my mind,” she said through tight lips.

Georgia extended her hand. “Hi, I’m Georgia Hastings,” she offered.

Miriam sneered. “I’m Miriam Hastings,” she replied. “Howard’s wife.”

Georgia felt the room sway around her. Hettie grabbed her arm and she heard Andy talking low to the woman, trying to encourage her to step away. Miriam seemed determined to stay where she was.
