GUNNER DIDNâT WAKE ME. IN HINDSIGHT, I shouldâve seen that coming. I was dead to the world within seconds, and when I woke the next morning, I was in nothing but my underwear and a tank top, and somebody had put a package of frozen peas on my hip and positioned me on my good side before drawing up the covers. The package was no longer frozen, of course, which meant I was sleeping with a bag of mushy peas.
âOh, gross.â I threw the bag on the floor and looked around the empty bedroom. I wasnât used to waking up alone. âGunner?â
âHey.â He appeared in the open doorway, shirtless and hair still wet from a recent shower. âI didnât want to wake you.â He grinned as he moved closer to the bed. âYou have some of your color back. Thatâs good.â
I glared at him. âI woke up with peas.â
âYour hip was inflamed when we got home.â He didnât appear apologetic. âI wanted to do what I could, and thatâs what I came up with.â
âI donât even like peas.â I made a face. âYou couldâve at least grabbed a bag of corn instead.â
âIâll consider it for next time.â He sat on the edge of the bed and traced my face. âYou donât have a fever. Youâre not so transparent I can practically see through you. You have a bad attitude. I guess that means youâre mostly back to normal, huh?â
It was a fair question. I shifted so I could test my hip and sighed. âItâs a little stiff. I donât expect it to be a hundred percent for at least another twenty-four hours. Itâs better than it was, though.â
âBut youâre still going to have limited movement.â
âI guess.â I rolled my neck at the same moment my stomach made a gurgling noise that wouldâve made a plumber run and hide. âIâm hungry.â
He snickered. âI never wouldâve guessed. Hop in the shower, huh? As much as I love you, that smell has to go.â
I frowned as I lifted my arm and took a sniff. I most definitely didnât smell daisy fresh. âHow did I get so ripe?â I was horrified.
âI think a morning spent with Mama Moon combined with a magical fight and ride on a bear wouldâve been enough to make anybody stink. When you add in the zombie fight, well, that was just a bridge too far.â
âUgh.â Tentatively, I got to my feet, testing my weight on my hip. I was gratified to find I didnât feel weak. âIâm good,â I reassured him as I headed toward the bathroom. âGet rid of those peas. Iâm grossed out.â
âYes, maâam.â He graced me with a saucy salute. âIâm going to make a big breakfast just in case we have visitors.â
âYour dad?â I racked my brain. âHe was at the high school last night, but I lost track of him.â
âYes, you lost track of everything. Thatâs what happens when youâre exhausted.â
âDid you get to dote on me? Iâm kind of sorry I missed it if you did.
