GUNNER DIDN’T WAKE ME. IN HINDSIGHT, I should’ve seen that coming. I was dead to the world within seconds, and when I woke the next morning, I was in nothing but my underwear and a tank top, and somebody had put a package of frozen peas on my hip and positioned me on my good side before drawing up the covers. The package was no longer frozen, of course, which meant I was sleeping with a bag of mushy peas.

“Oh, gross.” I threw the bag on the floor and looked around the empty bedroom. I wasn’t used to waking up alone. “Gunner?”

“Hey.” He appeared in the open doorway, shirtless and hair still wet from a recent shower. “I didn’t want to wake you.” He grinned as he moved closer to the bed. “You have some of your color back. That’s good.”

I glared at him. “I woke up with peas.”

“Your hip was inflamed when we got home.” He didn’t appear apologetic. “I wanted to do what I could, and that’s what I came up with.”

“I don’t even like peas.” I made a face. “You could’ve at least grabbed a bag of corn instead.”

“I’ll consider it for next time.” He sat on the edge of the bed and traced my face. “You don’t have a fever. You’re not so transparent I can practically see through you. You have a bad attitude. I guess that means you’re mostly back to normal, huh?”

It was a fair question. I shifted so I could test my hip and sighed. “It’s a little stiff. I don’t expect it to be a hundred percent for at least another twenty-four hours. It’s better than it was, though.”

“But you’re still going to have limited movement.”

“I guess.” I rolled my neck at the same moment my stomach made a gurgling noise that would’ve made a plumber run and hide. “I’m hungry.”

He snickered. “I never would’ve guessed. Hop in the shower, huh? As much as I love you, that smell has to go.”

I frowned as I lifted my arm and took a sniff. I most definitely didn’t smell daisy fresh. “How did I get so ripe?” I was horrified.

“I think a morning spent with Mama Moon combined with a magical fight and ride on a bear would’ve been enough to make anybody stink. When you add in the zombie fight, well, that was just a bridge too far.”

“Ugh.” Tentatively, I got to my feet, testing my weight on my hip. I was gratified to find I didn’t feel weak. “I’m good,” I reassured him as I headed toward the bathroom. “Get rid of those peas. I’m grossed out.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He graced me with a saucy salute. “I’m going to make a big breakfast just in case we have visitors.”

“Your dad?” I racked my brain. “He was at the high school last night, but I lost track of him.”

“Yes, you lost track of everything. That’s what happens when you’re exhausted.”

“Did you get to dote on me? I’m kind of sorry I missed it if you did.
