Chapter 10

My Wings Get Clipped in May 1971

“To Race, Ya Gotta Do What Ya Gotta Do”

It was now May and not too early to start thinking about the Reno Air Races in September, a little more than 90 days away. The first P-51 flew 60 days after its plans were approved by the British, but getting even an engine tune-up on one in this day and age might take that long—and maybe cost that much. My crew chief, Dick Tomasulo, responded to my question of how I could get more speed out of it by using his hand to simulate sawing off a wingtip at its outboard rivet line. Dick and his partner in Pylon-Air, Vern Barker, were more into modifying a plane by fabrication than engine mods. Clipped wings would be fairly reasonable and they could be restored if desired.
